Hi,
Can anyone tell me how to change my 96 cabriolet steering wheel without setting off the airbag? Do u need any special tools?
Thanx
-
Disconnect the battery and leave for at least half an hour. There should be two allen key bolts at the back of the steering wheel. Undo these and the airbag is loose. Pull it away very gently and you will see the connector you need to unplug and the airbag is then off.
-
When removing the main nut, don't take it right off and then pull the steering wheel off. Should it come off sharply the nut will stop you hit yourself in the face with the wheel, not nice!!!
-
Ok thanks, guessing you have to take the centre bit of the wheel off first?!
-
Yep as this conceals the nut that holds the wheel on.

Yes the centre part of the wheel IS the airbag.
-
Hi, is the connector next to the steering wheel? Doesnt seem to come off? Or is it thr yellow one the airbag end?
-
Yes yellow connector is airbag and takes some getting out IIRC but does come out and then the airbag is off. Personally I just got someone to hold my airbag while I undid the bolt and then tooj the wheel and airbag out together.
-
when i removed mine i stood crouched down behind the wheel undoing the x2 allen bolts,
i felt like tom cruise
make sure it dont go off on you and if it does at least your out the way.
-
changed the wheel now but the stupid airbag light is on :embarassed:
i couldnt mark the wheel and the spline because i was putting on a different wheel and it doesnt seem to like it. what can i do about the light being on?
stupidly i lined up the steering wheel and the wheels were straight but with all the tugging at the nut to get the wheel off it must of knocked the steering wheel out of alingment as its now wonky  dammit!
looks like im going to have to spend another 2 hours doing it again now!
-
2hrs? It's a 10 minute job!
You'd need to reset the light or maybe you just didn't put it incorrectly and it's worked itself loose?
-
it took me so long because i couldnt undo the bolt and also unplugging the airbag was a b!tch! dont help that im a girl and dont have the strength! how do you reset the light? do they need to do it at a garage?
-
erm oh dear....someone might correct me on this one you'd have to just un-plug the airbag light if its an after market wheel, stick the other back on mot time. if you have abs it will take your abs light out as well.
with alignment will just have to keep trying the positions you think when its on the centre, someone might have a trick to do this and i'm sure they will post it up if there is.

its not after market, got it out of a mk3 in the scrappy, i connected it all up ok, maybe its where the wheels off center, dunno?
