Hi Guys
my golf is driving me crazy
it`s a 2000 20 valve turbo
agu engine
i have replaced the following
maf
plugs
coolant temp sender
stripped and cleaned the throttle body
car has done 84000 miles
starts fine but when you pull away it looses power but it does not cut out
i have tried nailing on the by pass and it seams okay for a few mins then it starts again
i am at my wits end with this car
any help would be great
-
no fault codes either
-
Boost pipe blown off?
No faults so nothing electrical.
Do you have a boost guage installed?
-
i had a look at the pipes and hoses
i dont see anything obvious
-
the other half has just told me she could smell fuel earlier
-
sorry
i dont have a boost gauge fitted
-
check you timing is ok had the same problem with a other car and it was the timing that jumped
-
Could be any pipe from turbo to intercooler then intercooler to throttle body, Check nothing has popped off or split.
Also check the breather system (pcv system) from the rocker cover youl see a 90degree pipe it follows down to the oil filter housing and under inlet manifold, Again very prone to splitting etc.
As you said youv changed the maf etc.
Does it miss at all?
A common fault if missing is 99% the ignition amp on airbox, this sensor plays part with the coil packs.
Dont spend silly money on it yet, Just check all pipework first then go from there.
AGU's are very simple so you should be ok once youv researched the engine identifying problems.
-
it could be the ignition amp
getting dark here so i will check the pipework and hoses tomorrow
failing that it could be the ignition amp
cheers mate
-
As I said dont throw money at it.
Take the plastic engine covers off and take a good look around.
-
i have a brand new ignition amp here with receipt if ya need 1  £45 posted
-
when my boost pipe used to pop off it gave a strong smell of petrol :)
-
cheers Daz
i will keep that in mind
i had another look with a torch.does not appear to be any splits or hoses off
and there does seam to be a slight misfire
ignition amp maybe
-
When on boost an it hesitats or stutters it may be the ignition amp.
Take it off first clean off the face an connections try it again failing that buy Daz's and hes as geniune as it comes !
Top bloke

ignition amp playing up it will miss fire and sound like a retarded scooby. Dv playing up you wont get the hiss noise after letting off the gas you get a chatter/flutter noise. Boost leak from pipes ,look for a oily boost pipe (best look by intercooler).Spark plug gone ,you will be lucky to get out of second gear. All these have no fault codes. :nerd: All happened to my 1999 AGU. Timing out you get a fault code. :smug: but it will be cam shaft sensor as r-tech found when mapping it.
-
tis true jamie nice 1
got a spare agu maf aswell
-
i checked all the hoses and nothing
borrowed a ignition amp and that solved it,so i i bought a new one from ecp
the car is running better than ever
next jobs are:- cam belt kit, oil and filter change and replace the rear bushes as they are making one hell of a clunking sound
and not to forget the noisy starter
when will it end
-
Never
-
As above check all plugs and hoses etc and just have a good look around everything, and the bottom boost pipes from the inter cooler etc. Could try leaving ur battery disconnected overnight as well to reset the ecu? Anythings worth a try :)
-
always good having a mate with an AGU, easy to swap bits around lol
-
I have a 2001 1.8GTI and it does the same mate. It seems to have got a little better over the last few months (Weather related????), it does seem worse when it has been raining for some reason?? I've also changed MAF sensor, Plugs, Thermostat, Fuel filter, various lengths of pipe, de-cat. Engine management light keeps coming on, code something to do with thermostat. I reset the code and sometimes it can go 3 weeks before the light comes on again, some times it can come back on with in a hour???
VERY STRANGE
-
god dam it
it`s still playing up
where`s the swan vesta
fitted new fuel filter now
i thought golfs were reliable
i cant use the other car as its too greedy on fuel
-
after all my new parts its still playing up
only thing`s i have not done is
replaced the o2 sensor
checked the crankshaft sensor
changed the fuel pump
coil packs seam to be fine
reading through the 1.8 trouble guide does anyone think it could be the o2 sensor
2000 model agu

When my crankshaft sensor died or what ever happened to it i got a code popup .I didnt even know there was something wrong. Car drove fine. You say the ignition amp made it better ?
Have you got the alloy heat shield on the amp.
-
heat shield is there
there is no fault codes
a mate of mine hinted that it could be the crankshaft sensor
i think it might be the o2 sensor
everytime i take the plugs out they are black
i clean them and the car is fine
2 or 3 days later it`s back to the same
it`s driving me crazy
-
They should be a light brown or grey. What plugs you using ? Iv test loads of different plugs on the AGU engine. Most were black and sucked ,one set over heated and died .You cant beat ngk platinum PFR6Q perfect color (light brown) +spot on performance. The black sooty ones dropped power and would jurk on boost up a hill abit , i had to change them as to much soot they would of stopped sparking (had this with my old ford ,choke stuck on). If a crank sensor is cheap replace that as it says when to spark. On ford you could take it out and clean the clutch dust off the sensor. It sounds like the sparks your problem or somethings making it run to rich. :undecided:

The best plugs for the AGU engine: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK4-1-8-20V-TURBO-NGK-PLATINUM-SPARK-PLUGS-x4-PFR6Q-6458-VOLKSWAGEN-/110869008705?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19d04ed141
Better than denso, nology silver and pulse plugs.
-
Same thing happened to me I changed lambda sensor and it was fine again
-
i have tried different plugs
currently running the PFR6Q
no matter what plug i fit it doe`s the same thing
if i take them and clean them it`s fine for 2 days or so
then its starts again
plug colour when i remove them = black
-
where is the o2 sensor located
will it be easy to remove or are they a nightmare to get out
-
Hit it with a hammer on the bung in exhaust to free it up and it should come straight out. Don't be scared to hit it.... Just watch the sensor
-
Here We go again, still dies on me when i pull away
my list of new parts fitted
Maf
temp sensor
ignition amp
crank sensor
new plugs(tried both ngk and super 4`s)
new lambda sensor
new fuel filter
no fault codes
anyone know what else it could be
will i go for a box of matches
-
please
