Hi,
Dose anyone know which is the best, quickest way to take the starter motor off a 1991 1800 Mk2 golf ???
It look's to me as though i have to take the drive shaft off, or, attack the manifold :o
What a stupid place to have it >:( at the back of the engine!
Any help would be great ;)

If it is an 1800 the starter motor is at the front of the gearbox and very easy to get at.
From what you have described it sound like yours is an 1300.....
Anyway. if it is at the back of the engine you can remove it by first undoing the bolts from the gearbox bell housing to the starter motor you get at these from the gearbox side, not from the back of the engine. and then you should be able to move it about enough to undo the wiring. It is easier to remove the wiring from underneath the car. If it is a 1300 there is amanifold support bar which you have to undo in oder to take the starter off, this again is easier to get at from underneath the car.

huh ??? I'm with Mo3000, it isn't at the back of the engine on the car you have described.

Oh it's most definitely at the back of the engine, perhaps you aint seen an automatic golf ;) i should of said, ;D but, i thought id leave a little red herirng in there for ya's all :P
Cheer's any hoop for ya input.
But i was told this evening to drop the ball joint off and undo the drive shaft, still not easy to get to the bolt's though :-/
but we still love em :D

Ah, must be different with an automatic, lets see what it says in the old workshop manual.

You're right, just found this in the Bentley:-
'The starter and its attached solenoid are located at the front of the engine and transaxle assembly on cars with manual transmissions, and at the rear of the engine and transaxle assembly on cars with automatic transmissions. To maximize the amount of current available to the starter, a load-reduction relay interrupts the voltage to many of the electrical accessories when the ignition key is in the START position'.
I'll see what it says for removal.

Here you go,it mentions a cover plate. Doesn't mention having to remove a driveshaft or the inlet manifold so hope this helps:-

Well cheer's rich most helpfull ;)
They make it sound so easy though!! I'll see if i can get some measurements tonight of the gap your supposed to get it through when off :-/ it's gonna be up in the air tonight as the suspension is getting changed ;D or should i say lowered 8)
