Title: Dead coil pack
Post by: weazgti on 05 August 2012, 22:54
Today I ran a wire from coil pack to g1 pin 12 at fuse box so my rev counter worked on my abf mk2. It worked for ten minutes until the car cut out dead and wouldn't start until I disconnected the new wire and will not run at all with it on.
Is it possibly an early sign of coil pack failure?

Mk2's don't have coil packs.

I think you mean ignition coil (mounted on bulkhead under the scuttle)

Sounds more like a popped fuse at the moment.

Yeah, they don't have coil packs either. They have an ignition coil.

Just for clarity, coil packs sit on top of the plugs a la mk4 1.8T engines. The earlier units all have a central ignition coil. Some mk3 engines had a coil "bank" which ran the length of the head but that's about it.

It could be that the main coil has failed. Easiest check would be to either swap one from a friends for a test, or go down a scrappy and test it with one down there.

H'mmmm, I had something like this with the ABF in my Syncro.  It's on the list to sort before it comes out of the barn again.  Let me know if you find out what's going on before I do.
