Hi, just back from a 600 mile round trip to the Lakes and my trusty MK3 16v GTI didn't miss a beat!
However...
Noticed when home, and this has happened before but only a few times in the 10 months that I've had this car, that when starting the car while the engine is still hot it can 'race and then fall' the revs rise to about 1500rpm then drop to about 500rpm then rise then drop then rise then drop. It's as if I'm revving the engine but my foot is nowhere near the pedal. I have to turn the engine off then start the car again and it's OK.
Has this ever happened to you and what on earth could it be?!
Thanks!

I had this in my 16v, got a scanner and it was the lambda sensor, get it scanned and find out

Thanks mrsaunders, is this something I could replace myself easily enough? Where does it live? Cheers :)

lambda sensors are on the exhaust system near the cat . depending on where yours is on your model you can remove them with a 22mm spanner (of the top of my head) or a lambda socket , but like mentioned get your self a code reader or ask someone on here if there close to you and could read your fault memory first as it man be something else .
