Title: Golf gti mk2 8v K-jet Starter Motor won't disengage/ stop spinning.
Post by: Chris1276 on 04 August 2012, 15:15
Hi all, my starter motor on my Mk2 K-jet won't disengage once the engine is running. Can anyone give suggestions as to why it's doing this.

Cheers Chris.

Its stuck in the engaged position do not drive it like this. You need to remove starter, clean and grease the shaft, if its locked and you cant remove it then With engine not running hit the starter a thump with a block and hammer it should release

Please somene help me out here, I've spent a year & ahalf on this car with it in the garage chopping rust out replacing panels ect ect ect only to have electrical problems with the fusebox last week so much so I replaced that only for the starter motor to contantly keep turning over. It started doing it last weekend while we were trying to sort out why the number plate lights kept blowing fuses hence why we changed the fusebox today. There must be a short somewhere I'm told but we've electrically tested the wiring, changed the plastic ignition switch which is in the barrel & tomorrow I may just rip all the wiring out the way & start again either that or set it on fire with a can of petrol!!

After spending lots of time & money it was up & running for the first time two weeks ago & I had planned to get it timed up with a strobe light & a co2 check. Even the Metering unit has been set up as it was underfueling. But no now I get another problem so much so my patience is running thin!

Any help or advise would be much apriciated!!

Starter motor has not seized solid it turns the engine over, the car starts running & then it keeps on going even when You turn the key into the off postition.

The shaft is stuck, with dirt grime does this. A solenoid on starter causes the shaft to extend and pinion to engage with flywheel, when you release key it breaks circuit with solenoid causing shaft to retract

take starter off and test it by clamping it in a vice then sending 12v through it. Make sure it is well secured before testing as itll give one hell of a kick

 It isn't the shaft in the starter motor. Changed the starter motor & tested both as I had one spare. It must be a problem with the electrics as when I pull the ignition starter feed off the starter motor it is fine & runs. With it on it has a continuous feed to the starter so it keeps turning. Ignition barrel switch has been changed so it isn't that so its the red/white ignition starter lead or I have something else thats giving it continuous power. I hate electrics .

Its a bit of a guess but the x relay might be worth a look. It cuts the power to some circuits when the car is started so maybe its capable of leaving a permanent live to the starter under fault? Tbh though the ignition swith would have been my second suspect after the starter was eliminated.

Changed the ignition switch as I have 3 of those. Must be the relay You mentioned

And it still has a permanent feed to the starter.

Checked all of the above, seems when You turn key to position number 3 before it goes through to starting position on number 3 it starts the engine & the starter motor in continuously turning. We then detached the rear wiring loom from the fusebox, turned the key to position 3 and to start position 4 then is works fine. Starter motor cuts off normally so I can only presume there is a fault with the rear wirin loom which we have checked. Could it be because of the fuel lifter or fuel pump itself?? Any ideas as I may end up breaking this golf for spares as it's one problem after another?!

Fully seem welded up with new panels and a hell of a lot of work which we go to waste but I'm past caring, it may have to go.

It would be a hell of a shame if it got broken. My understaning of the ignition is that positon 0 is off poistion 1 is ectrics on and then you move to 3 which is spring loaded this activates the soleniod but as soon as you release the key it drops back to position 2 so the solenoid disengages. Id be checking the wiring around the ignition.
