as above.

Remember these cars are not safe at all. They crease badly and this is another reason why I refuse to do a big engine conversion.

It was a coach that went over it mind...

In all seriousness, above is awful..

I heard about this on the local radio just after it happened. They said it was a Blue Golf GTI, but I never imagined it was a Mk2.

I'm not going to speculate on what happened, although you'll get a pretty good idea from the pictures, but it goes to show that 20+ year old cars are more suited to cruising slowly and looking cool.

Easy done, don't want to think about all the overtakes I'vegot away with over the last 20 years, sad times indeed.

Got to love how all of the ignorant DM readers become RTA investagors after reading the story.

"Souped up golf. Says it all really."

My condolences for everyone involved.

REAL LIFE - won't sell papers or get us interested....

make it "Sensational" Then we become interested...

Such is life.... One reason why I'm backing off giving my son a GTI when he is 19....

The thing is Ken, we all know that a Mk2 GTI isn't an especially fast car, so I don't think the car is too blame. When I think back to my late night charges home from Young Farmers dances not long after passing my test, in a 1.0 Daihatsu Charade, many times it could have gone so horribly wrong.

My boy is 8 and he can drive a car around the farm fairly well. He can even make a fair effort at reversing a trailer. My thinking is that by the time he's out on the road on his own, he won't see driving as any big deal and feel he needs to push his limits.

rallying round on a farm can teach you a lot.   its saved my arse a number of times on the road and i know of meany situations / crashes that have happend where if one of the drivers had had same oppotunity they would have been abel to avoid crashing.

that said the A49 is a weird road it dosent seem that nasty when you drive it,  but a lot of people manage to have a lot of nasty crashes on it.  when i was younger it may as well have been a race track but i don't think its speed thats causeing the crashes on it.   drive down it when it's busy and it turns into a game of follow the snail with not much chance of getting past   and yoour mind dose end up wandering

You're right, but the problem with playing follow the snail, is that very few people leave enough room for overtaking cars to get back in. When you know the road and how to drive it, there are lots of very safe places to overtake, the problem is when you banked on overtaking 2-3 cars, suddenly the door gets closed and you end up having to go past a lot more.

I just sit back and go with the flow at whatever speed it is nowadays. A car can overtake me at Craven Arms, and by the time I get to Dobbies Island, I more often than not pull up along site him in the next lane.
