Nope the mk4 is!

The mk3 is just miss-understood

That's the opinion from the people that have never drove or owned one.

I really like them. If I was going to get another mk it would only be a mk5 r32

in my opinion the mk3 was the crossing over point to more mature upmarket hatch

the mk4, well i would agree is the worst lol!

coming from a history of alot of french hot hatch lunacy, i love my mk3 vr6, its comfy, spacious and roars when it wants to, fits the bill :)

But the mk4 has the r32, the 2.8 4motion and the 1.8t gti

Yes the mk3 was great for it's time but it isn't now, where as the mk4 is still good even for today. The 1.8t was so good it went in every vag car!

I agree vr6 roar!

Depends where you ask the question, the mk3 is the best all rounder, old skool looks with some modern touches. The Mk4, in my eyes anyway, is fugly and fat.

talking golfs in general mk4 is worst imo, it does have some nice engines though. mk3 and 1.8t is all round win

I'm sure I could show you some stunning mk4's that would make you all want one  :lipsrsealed:

Although i love my 8v its pretty much the reason why the mk3 gti was unloved as it was underpowered, handled poorly and was larger than the mk2 it replaced which was a better car in its day and the situation wasn't reversed until the 16v came along which was hardly a ball of fire itself , however and its a big however i do believe that the mk3's time has come around and the 8v is helping this because the mk3 has now gained a reputation for reliability and easy/cheap maintenance which then spurs owners on to the 16v and vr6 models, yes the 3 does have rust issues but no worse than a lot of other cars and better than a lot of other cars of its age.
Like a lot of people on here i drive mine every day and i regularly do 200-250 miles a week and enjoy every minute which i wouldn't be doing if i owned something with less revered heritage.
I also think that as most of the good mk2's become show ponies and weekend toys the mk3 is the 'cool' old Gti now.

The mk4 is stuck in chav/tacky world at the moment, one day i will buy a v6-4-motion but not until the t**ts have moved out.

Agreed, there either dropped on audi rims and led lights

or their just awesome - albeit abit deja vu styling... but so are mk3s

Bora's are underestimated when modding

bet you couldn't, could maybe show some nice mk4s but I would never want one  for the same reason I would never want a bmw, some may look ok but they are as common as mud

People do seem to laugh at the MK3, but I've never heard of an owner that hates their MK3

When you try one you're a little hooked, a good little all rounder really. You still see loads on the roads and they're only being broken or scrapped as they're worthless at the moment, but one day

The biggest mistake people make with the mk4 is putting huge cheap rims on and not lowering it, i'd really like a totally standard V6-4-mo but not for a few years yet.

But there must be at least 10 mk4s to every mk3 I see. I did pass a very nice light blue Vento today tho!  don't see many of them

Yes there are some very nice mk4s out there but same can be said for ANY car. A car is what the owner makes it. But I see alot more nice mk3's and it don't take as much o make a mk3 look good.
For me the mk3 is at that cool age where there is plenty out there still but is just becoming hard to find a good one. So there's plenty of spares and parts and has the old school ish look to it. No other golf looks as good slammed with nice rims.
I am defo hooked on them now.
I am on a stupidly tight budget and totaly skint all the time since I got made redundant yet I was still able to make a cool looking car that gets the nod and people looking all the time and cost me less than a grand so far and that includes the cost of the car. Brand new coilys. Brand new nice rear lights. New exhaust. And lots more and I have not even spent a grand wich is awesome.

Lets be honest, GTI in all forms is ok as is the TDI and VR but as for the 1.4/1.6 and 1.8 why bother.

Haha, mines only a 1.4 cos I can't insure anything else, and I quite often beat cars on corners/roundabouts.
But as soon as it gets to a straight I'm left for dust.

That's just down to driver.
The mk3 doesn't handle well.
You will find that what ever you've just beaten was most likely someone driving back from work and just in a rush to get home.

I Absolutley Adored my mk3 Valver, And the car i had prior to that was a beautiful mk5 GT TDI Sport 170bhp DSG modle fully specc'd up, I fell into money troubles and alas it had to go, i had a consession of other cheapo motors such as a polo & a mk4 escort, but I loved my mk3!!
it was smooth reliable, comfortable & fairly capable when tweaked slightly,
There are a lot of haters out there simply because they wont try one, or have never tried one,

When the wife bought me the mk2, I actually had second thoughts about getting shot of the mk3 an when the shell went to scrap i actually teared up a bit, so i have taken as much of her over onto the mk2 as possible so that she will live on in the shape of the car that it always wanted to be!! this was always my biggest bug bare when mk2 owners slated the mk3, as it shares a fair amount of components with the mk2!!!

my mk2 will be reminded where it came from regularly!

Mk3 ABF,
gearbox,
shifter,
clutch slave,
subframe,
wishbones,
steering rack,
rear axle,
brakes,
coilover suspension,
petrol tank & pump & fuel lines & wiring,
engine loom & coil,
lighting loom (cos the mk3 loom is betterer an more reliable)
Imobiliser & digifant 3.2 ECU (cos  its more reliable than the mk2 items)
exhaust downpipe,
wheels,
almost most importantly my anni seats & gearknob & gaiter

Thats a whole long list of mk3 parts for the mk2 to recieve that the mk3 haters can shove in their pipe an smoke it!!

LONG LIVE THE MK3 keep em going guys ( or recycle as much as ya can)

not a fan of the mk4 ok engine wise its up there with even the newest of to days cars but looks wise not a fan! looks to much like my old pug 307 and i hated that thing lol.

but if you have the money you can make your mk3 in to anything just look at this months Golf+ its pretty much an Audi in a mk3 shell perfect if you ask me!
i only have a 1.4 mk3 and its my first ever golf i luv it much better than any car iv had. i will be getting a VR6 in two years when insurance goes down for me but i know ill miss my ATS cups :-( lol.

My 1st car was a mk3 1.4SE, I ran that car into the ground- drove it far too hard than the engine was made to do!!

Now on my 2nd- the anniversary which I was always in love with since I saw one back in 1996. The car is serving me well, 300 miles a week and getting OK mpg too :)

I came from a 2006 A4 s-line 2.0tfsi which had all the toys and was very fast, but it feels good to get back in something a bit more basic.

And I get more people talking to me about the MK3 than the repmobile

I have owned a 16v Mark 2, various Mark 3 8v's and a VR, a couple of Mark 4's and a Bora. The Mark 2 was ok but apart from keeping it mint there aint a lot you can do to them. The Mark 4's were boring and fat !!!!! The Bora was surprisingly nice but again boring. There is nothing like a Mark 3 to put a smile on my face.....my VR was wicked which is why I want another but the 8v's are good enough as I dont go for flat out speed anymore. Just want mine to loom nice and drive well and get me to work and back happy and it ticks ALL the boxes for me.
