Hi all,
Back from a 'short break' and now concentrating on getting my Mk1
all pretty again.Currently the engine is out and I am re installing
a slightly frutier 8V, with webers.
Question: has anyone run a Mk1 with just a master cylinder connected
on the drivers side? (ditch the linkage)
Does it miss the carbs? does it stop!!!?
can you get a bigger 'race' master cylinder?
If anyone has experience of this would be grateful to know.

not sure if this is right but never mind :grin: cant you use the mk2 16v setup?? apprently it gives alot better breaking?
like i said im not 100% sure so dont quote me :laugh:

Yes I think your right about the 16v and a bigger master cylinder, but I was wondering if
anyone has ditched their servo and cross linkage altogether and sited a bigger possibly
non vw or'motosport master' cylinder on the driver side of the engine bay?
Its probably been done in racing to save weight just wondered if anyones ever seen this?

I used to have a mk1 '1100' golf that had exactly that. No servo, no linkage, just straight into the master cylinder. TBH I don't think it felt any worse than having the servo and linkage. I modified the car and later put an 1800 engine in there with standard Pierburg and I could still make the car stop ok on the same set up.

thanks for that it sounds promising, I am going to contact a local
tuning firm that used to sprint a very modified MK1, I am sure
I never saw a servo in it.Just a matter of finding the right master cylinder.
Lets face it anything will be better than that damn linkage!
Used to have LHD GTI in the 80's and the brakes were exceptional
even considered getting another LHD on the strength of the brakes.

I'd be really interested in the outcome of this as I want to do the same. I know some of the rally supply places do stuff along this line. I'm going to e mail them soon to find out. I'm doing a similar thing to u, in that I'm fitting throttle bodies to an 8v. I agree that anything that can be done to remove that linkage and cross section would be a good thing. It looks bloody horrible! Have you come across any clearance issues with the carbs? I'm thinking about removing the rain tray thing in front of the wiper motor, hopefully this will free up a bit of space. Are you going to heatsheild or lag the exhaust manifold??

Thanks for your reply.Not sure about the clearance as yet as my engine is one place being built and the body in another. My gut feeling is that a master cylinder will fit as it hasn't got to miss the injection manifold and assoaciated
cold start valve under it. I think I will need to make a special bracket to bolt to the bulkhead or I might be able to canniblise the existing servo bracket.
I think that you can get remote sevo's but I don't know a lot about these as yet but will keep looking.Will let
you know of developments.
I think I am going to shield it, have heard of problems on other cars where a lagged exhaust has built so much heat
up it has damaged the head. Might be an idea to remove the tray but not sure how much more room it would give,
it also seems to keep any engine fumes in the engine bay and out of the heater.

I spoke to a company called Rally Design yesterday, they do a servo less pedal box. This bolts into the existing place but has two adjustable mastercylinders and no servo. It costs 140 plus the vat. Not really sure if you could modify it to fit but it would look a lot better and i think it should improve the braking performance. Have a look at the rally design and TAS motorsport sites. They have a pretty good range of stuff. Good luck!!

Have had quite a lot of stuff from Rally Design and thet are very good and
reasonably priced.Thought about twin servos but not sure how much it would help
pedal pressure (not into hydrualics).Have run a dax cobra with a golf mk2 master cylinder
and can lock the brakes up without a servo, but then again its got Jag 4 pot brakes and disks front and back
and is only stopping 800kg and not 2000kg!
I will try and track down someone who's sprinted a GTI without a servo.

I've had the MK2 16v servo and 22mm mc fitted to mine, also got a weber conversion. The servo and mc made a big difference. My next step is to get the 280mm G60 front disks fitted :evil: Just waiting for the brackets to come off Velly.

Have contacted AP Racing who put me on to one of there suppliers, a very experienced brake guy (Sorry not got
his details at home) but....
things sound a little more difficult than I thought, to cut a long story short there are a few things to consider but don't quote me!:
1) The type of system used, 50:50 cross over (which is poss the Golfs) the master cylinder must suit this. So its not the case of dropping in any old or new master cylinder as it could be very very dangerous!
2) He thought that removing the linkage would only give moderate gains and would no where near compensate for not having a servo.
3) Also he has experienced a guy with a non servo'd Polo which was more than transformed by a softer brake compound.
I hate to say it but my gut feeling is that the linkage remains and to go down the old 16V servo 22mm master cylinder route along with ss hoses and softer brake pads.Bronze Mk1 says it makes a big difference.
My project isn't quite as advanced as yours, its on the drive and stripped being cleaned and derusted/repaired so got a bit more time to sort out this prob.
If you find anything would be pleased to know, just would be nice to find a simple cheap and lightweight solution.

Sounds like you have been busy! Got my car broken the other day (not the golf thankfully!!!) so i ain't really had the time to sort anything out! Sounds like u might be right about going down the 16v servo route. I guess its worth at least finding out. I'm luck to have a mate that works in a vw parts dept so i think I'm just gonna get all new parts where poss. Got a 16v servo kicking around and I have already had the cross section, brackets and linkages powder coated, so i guess its gonna be the way to go. If i do find out anymore I'll let you know!
What sort of work are you doing to your golf, have you had much done to it?

Sorry to here about your other car :sad: its a pain to sort out all the red tape

Powder coating, you really are doing a job on her.
Mines currently a shell with running gear and no engine wings or front panel, I am doing all the
welding, prep and any another repair work myself, bit of a learning excersize with the prep but
am goin to get it 2 packed by a decent local set up in silver (the worst colour for showing up
deficiences in the prep! great.(considered matt black, pehaps the radar guns night be fooled)
The 1.6 engine has a TSR head and a low mileage block and have decided to go with twin 40 webers
got a couple 'spare' in the garage which I got at a snip and refurbed.Fitting an Ashley exhaust and steel 15'
G60 wheels (they look so cool) probably be the only one running alloy BBS for winter and steels in summer!
Saw a silver Mk1 in Montelery race circuit France last year with them on....
They're also very cheap, lowest price I've heard is £22.00 each! Be nice to know off your mate what he can get them for.
Still undecided :undecided: whether to go full trackday with the car or have somewhere were the wife and kids can sit and carpet to put their feet on.
Saw white and blue trackday car in Golf+ mag run by an automotive lecturer with a 1.6 16 V up it and I must say the Mk1 Golfs look rather fetching with no frills, and bl----dy fast even on three wheels. 680 kg all in!
Have thought about fibreglass bonnets and tailgates to reduce weight but the jury is still out on this.
Be interestd to know the cost of your respray for my ref, have you had to do much on the body?
Have you got anything special on yours or have you any plans to trackday it?
Re the brakes, haven't given up yet, checked with Demon Tweeks and they do saloon racecar pedal boxes and twin servo but they are not car specific so quite a bit of work to do.Iam going to contact TSR tomorrow just in case........surely someone out there must have raced or sprinted a MK1 without a servo??
Anyway enough of my ramblings good luck with the project,

Wish i had thought of that, got done on Saturday, 3 points and another 60 quid, could of been worse though! Not had the best of weeks motoring wise!
Hopefully the car is going to be pretty special once its done. My plan is to either replace with genuine or refurb everything where possible! Went to the body shop yestereday and took of the rest of the running gear off, the car is now ready to be prepped. I plan on refurbing everything i took off yesterday. Didn't fancy prepping the car my self, not enough patience and not enough spare time, stripped everything out myself but thats the easy bit
Have got lots of chrome for the car (grille, side strips, window seals) still trying to get chrome bumpers! The engine has been bored and fitted with an Audi crank to take it up to 2.0L all the head has been done and got a nice lairy cam on its way. Got a 4 branch manifold and eventually i want to fit throttle bodies. I think this will happen but it's just gonna take a bit of time to save upfor them! Managed to get a full set of FK konigsport coilovers and hopefull some Ronal LS 15x 8 alloys to chuck on...
If you decide to get anything from demon tweeks let me know as i only live about 5 miles away, can sometimes blag 10% of them as well. I've asked my mate about G60 steelies for ya, he syas about 110 inc the vat for a set of 4. I also fancy doing a few track days but i want the car to be comfortable for long journeys. I don't know how much the respray will be but I'm guessing anywhere between £1100-2000. I'm hoping it shouldn't be to much as we haven't found any major problems as yet! Fingers crossed......

Hi Ben,
Sorry not replied earlier, been a bit busy of late, work/cars etc.
2 litre engine! wish I'd gone down that route, saw a low mileage
audi block on ebay, went for £235.00 but already committed to the
1.6 (for now anyway)
Would like to see your Golf sometime, perhaps if I get mine done I
could pop over, mind you the rate its going will be lucky to get over
next summer!

£110.00 inc vat. thats very reasonable for steels, is that a 'special' price
or to 'Joe public'?
The local body shop is going to give a ball park figure for the spray tommorrow so
will be very happy.... or very sad (and reading up how to spray your own car)
Will keep an eye out for some chrome bumpers!

I think the price was 'mates rates' but I'm not sure. I've got an Audi block but it's only the bare block. No crank, pistons etc etc. Likewise I'm always keen to see other peoples Mk1s. Gonna go play with my coilovers now...... mmmmmmmmmmm adjustable suspension........
Think i need to get out more..
