Just had the dreaded call back, to be fair I was expecting a it to fail because I knew my rear axle bushes where shot, but I was not prepeared for when he was about to say....
"Hi mate its phil from total car care, Right as expected your car has failed the MOT on them bushes but theres a few serious things we found, infact im supprized you havent had a serious accident."
ME
"Err go on....*starts sweating""
"Well that knocking from the front, both your shocks are shot, as well as your suspension racks. All your bushes are gone, and both your rear pivel arms are nackard and rear mounts need replacing also your rear brakes are uneven and need replacing"
ME
"*Gulps* Phil give me some decent news at the very least"
"Well I can get it all done and have a new passed MOT all done for around £470 but your car will drive how it should and most of all, it will be safe"
ME
"can you have it all done today?"
"well i'll do my best Nin"
ME
"get it done phil, nice 1"
I have to say I thought id enterain you alot with a reinaction of the phone call :grin:
Anyhoo Yes thats defo the most expensive MOT ive ever had, but in my honest op its a small price to pay to keep my baby on the road after the money ive piled in sorting the engine out and getting her running sweet im not about to give up now, also in my eyes I feel lucky to be alive cuz lets face it id only would of had to take a corner wrong and someting could of snapped = Life over! :shocked:
-
Do you have coilovers fitted already?
If you dont buy the JOM's from DPM for £150 delivered. (thats front shocks done)
Rear bushes are pretty cheap but time consuming.
What front bushes are shot? (wishbone bushes maybe?)
-
£470 for all that bloody hell mate hes proper pulled your pants down.
-
Tbh mate I think this too.
Get the failed mot sheets and post whats actually failed on here.
-
An I bet this is one of these £25 mot's advertised all around Cardiff, they get you in and bullcrap everyone saying this an that needs doing to get the work.
Im not implyin this has happened :grin: however there are many garages locally doing this just for work.
-
Front shocks - £40-£50 each?
Rear bushes - £12 each plus at least an hour or so fitting
Wishbone bushes £8 each or so plus fitting
Rear brakes? Discs and pads say £50 plus fitting
I assume they will track everything up afterwards - £20
MOT itself of at least £30
There's a good couple of hours labour there plus parts
-
Well to be fair guys hes getting all the work done for me by 5:30 today ill post up everything thats been done but i know i could of had coilovers for £150 but right now i just want the car safe as i need it for work tomorrow but i personally thought that price was good considdering thats inc my MOT cost and all parts/laybour this garage wouldnt rip me off anyway i know the guys that work that and the owner is a family friend :)
Ill keep u updated when i pick it up later

£470 for all that bloody hell mate hes proper pulled your pants down.

you will end up with an olympic ring :grin:
-
red ring of death :grin:
-
OOOH MIGHTY RING, HOW HARD CAN I SHUNT THEE!?
-
That quote seems about right for me, You have to consider that those jobs are labour intensive.
Sure you can do it for a fraction of that if you DIY as you'd only be paying for parts.
Garages have overheads unlike a home mechanic, Factor that in and the quote isn't so bad.
Weather or not your car actualy needed all that work is another question.
-
Agreed.
Especially as i've seen people get quotes of like £250 just for rear axle bushes on here. It isn't cheap but id hardly say he has been shafted, especially if they've fitted a new steering rack. Id be more pissed off in 12 months when it fails on the same stuff again because they fitted eurocarparts rubbish.
-
Ok got the car back and I have to say it feels soooooooo much nicer to drive, the knocking on the front (I posted about a week ago asking what this could be) turned out it was in the end the passenger shock, he even showed me the shock and beleave me when i say it was fooked.
Before Id take corner at normal speed and if i hit a tiny bump my steering wheel would shake quiet voilently I knew there had to be something wrong somewhere.
I always knew my rear axle bushes where shot and they have been for awhile every tiny bump sounded like a loud BANG in the back.
But driving my car home it really did feel like a brand new car i even put the windows down, when over a sleeping policeman and listened to my new shock hiss lovely as my car took the bump with ease :)
In total I had new...
* Rear Axle bushes.
* MOT.
* Tracking.
* New rear brakes.
* New Track rod ends.
* New wishbone bushes.
* New Front shocks.
* New front shock mounts.
* Something about nos arm?.
And the laybour was £210.
in my honest opinion I say its money well spent with the VAT it all totaled £505 however I also got a warrenty with the work :)
-
Reasonable price for the work that was done :smiley:
-
omg you must have a sore ring after that shafting.
-
:sick: I love the fact I love getting my hands dirty that wouldve cost me less than that!
But your happy and the cars sorted mate thats the main thing.
If your stuck on anything in future give me a pm and il try and sort you out rather than paying garage fees :wink:
-
I'd say the labour was fairly reasonable, there were a fair few sh!tty jobs there that needed doing. They've over charged big time on the parts though!
-
Thanks guys, and cheers Jamie will defo take you up on that :cool:
-
No probs buddy
-
TBF for all that and if you cant do it yourself due to not have ramps or someone who can help...then its not bad with warranty :wink:

Really.....cheapest prices from eurocarparts....
* Rear Axle bushes. £16.74
* MOT. £50
* Tracking. £20+
* New rear brakes. Discs £19.50 each, Pads £12.90 pair
* New Track rod ends.£14.70 each
* New wishbone bushes. £9.12 just rear bushes
* New Front shocks. Sachs £67.20 each
* New front shock mounts. £14.32 each
* Something about nos arm?.???
I make that at £270 for just parts plus the MOT (£30-50), the tracking (£20-50) and the VAT (£102). £510 seems a good price with the labour.
-
Well Thankfully i know they dont use euro car parts for there parts, they get them from Dave edwards or GSF as far as i know.
-
Not as bad as my old car. :evil: The list was so long ,they were about to stop me taking it home.The car was mint. :embarassed: I only did 400 mile from the last mot (dry use only) they loved it. :undecided: Its got no brakes ,there leaking, why does it stop and the fluid never went down. :angry: Stripped and scrapped it as i cant see what there on about. :cry: Thing that pissed me off is they toke 2 hours to mot it and a bloke before me had the same car (sh!tter) he passed. :sick: Had a car before, it fail. Ok ill fix it.The guy went home left me and my dad just sitting there. A guy ended up locking up and saw us, can i help you. Yeah, my cars getting motd.......did it pass, old man said yeah. :kiss: It passed as a fail. :rolleyes:

Must be because I always pay cash :wink:
Or try do it myself
-
Do people think garages don't charge for things? :huh:
I'd be happy to pay that for all that work :huh:
-
I think people forget that this pays their wages, rent and bills.
Its a completely average price, ive seen quotes of £600-£800 for that kind of work before!
-
very true. think ever1 here is used to either doing stuff there self or geting there mates uncles mate to do it for them on the side for a 5er think of all the overheads the garage has. i bet if you took it to a dealer the genuine parts bill would have been more :) haha
