Title: Mark 1 gti cab for everyday use?
Post by: Neil on 31 July 2012, 21:29
Hi all I'm thinking of buying a mark 1 gti cab I've always wanted one but the other half said I am mad. I will have to use it as an every day car but I only live about 3 miles from my workplace,is it realistic to buy one to use like this or should I just keep dreaming? ThAnx all

I ran one as my only car for 3.5 years so yes it can be done. 6 miles a day doesn't really give it much of a run though.

ThAnx for that I think I'm gonna go for it. I thought the less miles each day the better?

A few years back I had one that I used every day the only minor problem was that in really heavy rain it wasn't very water tight, other than that it was fine.

Coincidentally this "for sale" one pulled up a few spaces away from me on Sunday Night and I thought to myself yep I could use one of these again. That being said I'm used to running older motors on a daily basis but if you have been cosseted in something nice and modern if might not be as good as you think.

^^^ What he said.. (ps that cabby is niiiiiice)

I've had Cabbys and Tintops as dailys for years with a job 12 miles away which was perfect really... Experienced very little issues with normal servicing.  Like Gibby says, your run is a bit short, just go a longer way to work so that it gets a chance to get to temperature, might as well have fun twice a day at least.

ive used mine as a daily for 2 years and few issues, they actually thrive on use, i found when working in ireland and only using it every 3 months there tended to be more small things going wrong, regularly serviced [ i do mine every 5000 ] then you get very few major issues. if you pick a good one that does not require work then go for it.
it does help to be handy with the spanners when things do go wrong but they are simple vehicles to maintain.

What Shaun said really. Car will never get up to running temp and you'll probably have more issues than you think. Easy solution is to go the scenic route. On the whole I would say that if you had two cars the exact same, the one that got used the most would more than likley have the least issues as it's parts are constantly moving and getting lubricated etc.

Which is why TAXI's can do hundreds of thousands of miles without breaking a sweat.

As an example, a neighbour of mine is a mini cab driver.  He shared his last car (2003 Renault Laguna estate) with a guy that did the night shift and therefore the car never really got a break, It managed to cover nearly 300k before the turbo went and that was pretty much all that went wrong.  You simply wouldn't get that from the same car doing average Joe driving.

just to add overall ive owned mine since 2005 and have on occasions thrashed it hard, actually blew the headgasket mullering an audi tt, since engine/box rebuild i have had no issues that i couldnt sort myself.
its been used for short runs long runs ferrying stuff from BnQ also even on a cold engine has been thrashed and it laps it up.
i do preventative maintenance where possible but regular oil and plugs and filter changes are key.
if its not getting to temp on your work run then a good run out once or twice a week with a damn good thrashing once a month should see you alright.
its about using it so even a run up the shops and back wont bother it as long as it gets that good run out as well.
btw buy a good one to be a keeper and maybe pass on to family, a sound body with good paintwork/hood is preferable to a shot engine. engines are easier to source than good body/paint
