Title: Definitive engine swap thread.
Post by: vik on 31 July 2012, 19:33
Which engines do and don't go into a mk2? I know there is quite a bit of interchangability between VAG stuff, so you could probably shoehorn in a lot of stuff, but I mean within reason, ie. fairly well known/documented swap.

So far i can think of:

9a 2.0
ABF 2.0
VR6 2.8 and 2.9
various flavours of 1.8t

any others?

i know of a supercharged R32.... but then, thats based around the VR lump i suppose,
Pd130 will go in but would require some serious research i would imagine

Don't forget the simple 2.0 8v bottom end swap

1.9TDI

The issue is the number of variations there are on each motor: on ABF alone K-Junk, Megasquirt, Digi 3.2, ITBs, 02A gearbox as part of it etc etc

If anyone has ever heard of a non-VAG engine going into a Mk2 I'd be interested to hear more. Hopefully mine will last a good few thousand more miles, but I may end up keeping it beyond the life of this engine. Parts are hard to come by here in Manila, a new Golf engine more so. Has anyone put anything Japanese in a Golf? I know it sounds like sacrilege, but it might be the only thing I can afford once the engine goes!

S2 quattro engine is a nice one.
As far as non vag goes...
Theres a mk2 with a 5.0 TVR griffith engine. Those are practical

Could we agree on degree of difficulty to fitting each engine and what parts require modifying/supplying.

I've got a 16v but with 170k miles I'm thinking it might expire in the not too distant future.

This is basically what I was getting at. Obviously lots of engines can fit. But I mean realistic/well known and documented swaps.

Is there anything other than a like for like swap that will go straight in, or nearly straight into a 16v?

ABF (ok, basically like for like, but very easy)
G60 (pretty straight forward)
1.8t (pretty well documented)
1.9td (AAZ - straight forward diesel swap)
1.9tdi (1Z/AHU - little more complicated by potentiometer req'd for throttle)

Whats with the PD conversions. Why are they difficult? A few keep mentioning the wiring?

In terms of understatement, I think this is a stinker.

I'm a wireman by trade and would love to do the PD conversion one day. I think I read that you did this conversion?
Seems to be limited guides on this conversion. Whats so difficult about it?
Only a few wires

with the PD it's  not the wires themselves that are the killer,  you need a lot of donour car and really a cracked ecu or it is a twerp.

theer are a whole lot of litel issues that on there own aren't any big deal  but add them all up and can be arsed runs out.  bit like the TFSI motor

No.  I think Danny had a pop at it a while back.  Not sure of the outcome.

It's only wires, so it must be possible, but I think it's a lot of work to end up with a TDI engine.

put it in,  got it running, drove it up the road, decided didn't like it , pulled it back out and sold it.

pd 130 with a map will make a mk2 move in some serious order  feel faster than a lot of 1.8t's  ( once its stopped spinning ) but on the downside car drives like lumphammer tho      way to nose heavy and full of torque steering nastyness and throttel seemed to be like an on / off switch.
think mapped skoda fabia VRS with the anti crash turned off but worse.

basicly it's a whole lot of work and all you do is remove all the GTi ness  ,  fast but not fun
