Im new to Golfs and VW's in general and am yet to get a haynes manual so i was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a few bits.

is there a hose missing here as it seems something has been blanked off?
This part coming off the airbox seems to be missing a pipe that connects around the manifold injector area on the left side of the engine?

I found this plug wrapped up and cable tied together behind the oil cooler, cant find exactly where it comes from or what it plugs into?
Any info would be great.
Cheers,
Ben.

Have a look at this for the missing pipe:

There is a 52mm flexible pipe that goes from the airbox to behind the engine - you can just see it here under the the green air filter

Not sure on the plug

I would bet the plug is for the knock sensor, do you have one bolted to the front of the block, slightly obscured by the alternator?
-
are either of the pipes important? ie, if they arnt replaced will they do any harm?
Cheers,
Ben

The price you can get the pipes for and the fact they will tidy the bay I would replace them.

Looks like a mk3 golf crank sensor wire and mk3 bottom end (2 litre conversion) :nerd:
If its the crank sensor (sensor fits behind the front engine mount bracket) then cut it as you don't need it.
You do look like you are missing the knock sensor though? Something you should have!
If it idles fine then I would leave the air pipes as you just end up with oil in the inlet. Would fit an oil catch can.
The airbox missing pipe is fine. I would remove the restrictor in the airbox if its still in there.

Just don't drill holes
-
OOO reaally?!
any way to confirm the 2l bottom end?
yeah it idles fine and runs good so i will leave it, i think the restrictor is already removed.....and its already been drilled unfortunately, but either a new airbox and panel filter or induction kit is in the pipeline so not to worry
I justs checked what the knock sensor looks like on ebay and im 99% sure i have one.

mk3 2.0 AGG or ADY bottom end (crank sensor versions) The black box on the block and the crank sensor is a dead give away.
You need to leave the crank sensor in or oil will spill.
Shows where the sensor fits

Oh cool, looks like i do have a 2ltr bottom end.
What sort of power gains, or any advantages would the bottom end give.
The car doesn't feel slow compared to.my old bmw 323.
-
Nice bonys to find a 2.0 bottom end in there, wee bit more bhp but good bit more torque from it
torque is what makes a car feel fast
-
yeah its one of a few pleasant surprises the previous owner didnt mention
it does pull in gear verry well.
-
I too had a red 2.0 8v. Pulled very strong and was a a huge improvement over the 1.8. Could this be the same one? Get some more pics

ahhh i wonderrrr

recognise it?
-
Very nice that. The guy who colleced it was from cornwall and thought this could have been the same one but its not.
-
Nice. Tornado red is best colour in them. I hope you have plans to replace those wheels with something more befitting a mk2
-
oh yeah. some bbs RA's and coilys are on the list.
