Right guys, after being away for several years, im back in a mk4! Picked up a 03 gt tdi today 150, in pretty good shape, with close to full history. Was all excited until....
When driving there is a loud whistle, I wouldn't say its your normal turbo whistle, in the past I had a 1.8T and it come with a forge dump valve, now it sounds a lot like a electronic dump valve. From what I can tell the car drives fine, boosts fine, pulls well, but it seems like the turbo is kicking in high up the rev range, but the noise is there instant, just with a tap of the accelerator.
Also when on stand still the revs stay on idle under the 1000 mark, then they will raise to 1200 and stay there until i press the accelerator and they will go down again slowly.
Its been on VCDS and:-
Engine faults:
17664 - Engine Coolant Temp Sensor (G62)
17965 - Charge Pressure Control - P1557 - 35 - 10 Positive deviation - Intermittent.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
-
Also theres no apparent smoke, on idle or under boost..
-
Bit more accurate would be a charging sound not whistle.. come on someone help me..
-
First code is self explanatory really isnt it. Replace the coolant temp sensor
2nd one

Id give the car back.....what mileage has the car done??
Peak torque on the 150 is developed higher up the rev range
Any black smoke out the back??
-
Can't give the car back, terms of sale.
Can't really see any smoke coming out to be honest, ive looked on a lot of forums, its coming up with boost pipes coming off? around the intercooler?
-
Yeah the lower intercooler pipes pop off for fun. The lugs wear away. You can do the self tapper mod or buy new pipes at around £50 or so each; might be more :undecided:
Worst case is sticky turbo vanes......

Self tappings enough as long as its not split somewhere silly, from what i've said what would your personal opinion be?
-
Is the sound a little like a siren??

Is the sound a little like a siren??
I would say so, siren/electronic dump valve..
-
Mine whistle's till about 2500-2800 also dumps like a good un has done for 110k

The whistle goes through the rev range on mine.. starts before the turbo kicks in..

Dont forget you got a decat Steve
Siren sound tends to be turbo.....
-
another opinion has said its more of a whistle when rev'd not siren?
-
also i must stress the car has not gone into limp mode
-
Without hearing it we can only speculate.........
The fact that code you posted was found has meant the car has gone into limp mode at some stage.
Try loading the car up in 5th or 6th gear at around 60mph. Thats usually when it will hit limp mode......
-
Its been well over 60 under full load (on a private road), still running fine.. i did try hard to make it go into limp mode through all gears.. seems fine

I meant get the car doing around 50-60mph and under 2000rpm in 6th and then plant your foot. Thats when the turbo will work hard and usually when you hit limp mode
You see what i mean about speculating??
Clear the codes and see if they come back over the next week or so. Then go from there  they code be old codes which have never been cleared

Will try that tomorrow mate, thanks. I know its all speculation, I just wanted to go sleep on a easy head thats all, at the moment im just saying ££ signs, Im hoping its just a pipe, as its been pretty well maintained, nothing to relate to a turbo, but at the same time theres been no invoices given, just a service book.

I know that, I almost had my self convinced it was boost pipes lol!

Right guys, i've made a video, crap video, but highlights the sound well, I have no idea how post the video on to here, so if anyone wants to pm me there email address I will email it across.
Also when driving, the noise starts at 1100 rpm, gets progressively louder through the rev range when driving.
Been to a garage, they were not a great deal of help, and just went turbo turbo no point going on a ramp, its the turbo winding, all fair ness they probably know a lot more than me, but a quick look over wouldn't have hurt.
Thanks so far for the help
-
I also drove the cars in low revs in 5th and 6th gear as advised, no limp mode symptoms.

Thats a very noisey turbo.......
-
So your moneys on it being the turbo? Now would you say its the bearings or the Vanes?

Its very noisy compared to others I've heard. It it was vanes you'd be hitting limp mode
Is the car using any oil? Can you look around the turbo area to see if you can see any oil seeping?
Thing is turbo's can be noisy and last for ages; its a bit of an unknown as to how long they will last. Mine went with NO warning at all :undecided:
-
I will have it on a ramp to check over the next few days, and will check the oil over a 24 hour period as well
-
Has it got a decat? sounds just like mine...
-

Im not sure, looks a standard exhaust to be honest, any chance of getting a video of yours?
-
Sounds like my 115 with a decat.
I too was worried...I also get overboost though even though the vanes are clear and all the usual things have been checked.
Is it possible that we could have a TIP leak so its sucking in additional air and allowing more noise out?
Thing is, I know a decat will sound louder - but most of my noise is from the front of the car too!
-
lemme know if you find anything else out
do you have less power?
perhaps overboost?
I have both and the noise
