Title: New to MK4's, MPG advise.
Post by: Godzilla on 30 July 2012, 17:22
Hi

In the past 6-7 years of being on here I have had a good few MK2 GTI's, MK3 GTI's and VR6.

Looking at some MK4 GTI's now.  The 1.8 Turbo (150bhp) gets ok reviews but what about its MPG?  I do about 45-50 miles a day, this is A roads and town driving.  How much does it cost to fill a MK4 GTI Turbo up from empty and how many miles can you get to that, lets say average driving style.

Thanks in advance

50 miles a day 4 days a week running AGU 195bhp stage 1 remap.

That costs me £40 mixed driving between town and 'A' roads

Fill up is about £70 but I never drive normal with full tanks  so weekly £40 for me haha

Can get £74 in AUQ.
Pussy footing around being economical looking at 34mpg averaging 75 on motorway. Average 85 and down to 27mpg.
50/50 A and motorway gonna struggle to average 33 unless doing 60mph.

Thanks for fast replies.

So not that bad then.  My VR6 used to make me  at fill up times......200 miles to a tank!!  She was RR'd @ 184.8bhp so I was very happy till I took on a MK4 GTI thinking I was going to walk all over it.....He won, looked standard from outside but must have had a re-map or something?  I have been in a MK4 and they feel solid and fairly comfy.  Trouble is my daughter is now 14 and wants to be seen in something a bit flash so a Golf GTI MK4 seems a good choice as they look good, go well and fairly practical as I have an American Bulldog who needs a bit of boot space.

Yeah and if you get post 2001 you will already have a k03s turbo which a remap alone on a good standard car will achieve 210bhp quite easy.
Mk4's are getting way too cheap these days

I get around 27-28mpg day to day driving, this creeps up to just over 30 on the motorway and drops to the teens when driving spiritedly

i can get 50 miles per 1/8 of tank reading on mine but thats fannying about with country roads, drove to gatwick and back on saturday from Ipswich and did it out 1.3 of a tank, 70mph, sensible me...but then i get the urge to pull past every gary boy in the village as they as they come on to the A12 in the mornings and evenings in their Saxos and Corsas

34MPG if im being good and seeing that i think its a 55ltr tank its not bad

18MPG when im being a a menace to the chavs

...no mods yet either but get remapped and i hear you can add another 10MPG...dont know if this is true though

Bloody 'ell Steve.......Which TDI do you have?  From what I know they do a 100, 130 and 150bhp versions?  Are the engines called 'PD'?

190BHP and getting 600 miles from a tank......That is very impressive!!  The torque must be shocking.

I was about to say, you'll never see an extra 10mpg. Theoretically you'll see a slight increase if you drive in exactly the same way, realistically this will never happen.

I have read about this Dom......How if driven in the exact same manner after a re-map increase MPG......This has always confused me.
Title: Re: New to MK4's, MPG advise.
Post by: jamie1989 on 31 July 2012, 12:05
The theory is you dont have to push the car has hard to make the car go faster if that makes sence.

With 150bhp you have to push it harder to get to 70 for example than a remapped 1.8t

Should be around the 300lbs ft mark possibly a little more

I'm getting 540ish out of my A3 with 205bhp and 320lbs ft

On a run fuel economy should improve as the engine is working more efficiently.  Your engine needs to be in good health though.  Any minor problems will be highlighted by a remap

yes thats right. or so they say....

I can get 320 to 340 miles from a tank, but that is sensible driving mind.

with a full tank i can get about 100miles out of 1/4 and thats unmodded, thinking should have better performance once my decade old PCV system is yanked out and all the useless pipes are gone, better engine better fuel economy right? then i'll throw in a miltek or alternative, a spec1 from Rtech and try n lighten the car somehow

...and stop driving my girlfriends plump mother around and not get an ounce of gratitude for it  :lipsrsealed:

Yup, theoretically the engine will be working more efficiently, therefore using slightly less fuel. In reality this will not happen as you will enjoy planting the throttle too much. I've already posted a link to my fuel consumption over my last 6000 miles of driving, long term average is 27mpg. Before the remap it was 30ish.

That is not that bad then Dom as a re-map can add on an extra 40-50bhp, so for a 190bhp car 27mpg over 6000 miles is good, well I think so!  My VR6 over 4000 miles was 23mpg

So what would 0-60 times be on a re-mapped Golf GTI and what would top speed be?

Mine was 205bhp & 245lb/ft when first mapped, I have since added a 3" turbo back exhaust with decat and silicone boost pipes & TIP, so I'm not sure what it is running now.

Again, not really sure on 0-60 time, it's not much slower to 60 than my mates 3.2 TT, and from a rolling 40-50mph start there is nothing between them. Top speed is something I have never tried, it has seen the naughty side of 140 on an old airstrip but I ran out of road

I'm so impressed and happy with my petrol GTI-T (150bhp) I thought I'd share it:    £70 to fill, reset counter and driving through London I've done 300 miles when the fuel light comes on - that's good HOWEVER the last two tanks have taken me over 400 miles before the light comes on!  No lie!  That's what 'd expect from a diesel!

Forget about motorways - my last two tanks were driven on A-roads where my speed fluctuates between 40-50-60 in low traffic.  Along with an economical driving style this is easily achieved.  Remember that most if not all mass produced cars peak around 56mph for optimal mpg.

On the MFD reset the MPG"2" view at every fillup, and you can be sure it's pretty damn accurate!  I say always keep an eye on the MPG"1" view (per trip) and play games with yourself to keep these numbers high.

Considering the power, build, comfort, style, economy etc the MK4 GTI Turbo (decent one for £2000) is 10/10!!!

Thanks Dom for telling me about fuelly.com!   I'm really anal about this, I only ever fill to the brim (for accuracy), I keep every receipt and reset all counters at fillups.  Then take photos of the MFD at all the "2" settings and go by the trip reading to show how many miles the tank gave me to the nearest 10th of a mile!  I've also been building a fat-ass excel spreadsheet about the car.  It's not that I don't have fun, just want to know what my car does exactly.

The app is Road Trip there is a free one and paid one. Get the free one and if you like it get the paid one. Because you can transfer all the info over . The free one is just basically the MPG cost per mile etc. And the paid one you can add all the expense of running a car like parts, servicing, tax etc and see how much your car is really costing you a year/mile
