Title: Clocks are in with MTE and lit needles!
Post by: Wazzzer on 30 July 2012, 10:41
namely me.  :embarassed:

I'm just after some basic instructions on what I have to do to code my cluster in when I fit it. I have VAG TACHO and VAG COM ready to do everything (SKC pull, mileage correction, key coding) but I'm just not 100% on how to code the new cluster in.

I know there is a step by step guide on the Ross-Tech site but it seems a bit long winded and I'm rubbish at following instructions lol

Any help is much appreciated

Old_no7 Neil is the man to speak to though he says the ross tech is the best guide to use

Yeah I've dropped Neil an email but no reply yet. I'm just worried about using that guide as it says it's for immo3 cars whereas mine is originally immo2 :undecided:

not for coding the clusters but there is one on there for doing the keys which is now saved in my favourites

One thing I'd be weary of is the ability of VAG TACHO to actually pull the SKC code from your clocks.

I tried coding in Jamie's spare set the other week and it came up with a code which I entered but it was having none of it  :undecided:
Title: Re: Cluster coding for a dummy...
Post by: Wazzzer on 30 July 2012, 13:16
I'll bear that in mind mate. At least I've got my old clocks to fall back on if it all goes wrong. What version were you using?

EDIT - I'll try VAG TACHO on my clocks later and see if they pull the right code

Urm think its 2.1 or 2.2  :undecided:  It's a few years old but the couple of times Iv'e tried coding it NEVER seems to have pulled the SKC code  :undecided:

Must be user error

Did you add the 0 in front?

Neil has come through for me, what is worrying is that his email looks to be stuff he's pulled straight out of his head, think he's got the process etched in his brain

Anyways I'll give it a go later, still can't find an outside temp sensor but I'll just run some cable out under the scuttle panel and leave it there for when I pick one up or just test out this Passat one I've got
Title: Re: Cluster coding for a dummy...
Post by: Rhyso on 30 July 2012, 13:40
Yep I added the 0 and it made no difference

strange. I'll see what happens later then

Its my strange car haha
Iv covered my current clocks in a Forge sticker as I cant see MPG etc anyways. (the red screen fades away )

My spare clocks are now broke I tried stripping them to swap the red cluster part but heavy hands ruined them lol

Here is a link to a PDF guide (http://www.gwdale.co.uk/other/immo2_to_immo3_install.pdf) that I've written, memorise it as it will self destruct in 90 seconds

Extracted the SKC from my old cluster today to see if I could get the hang of VAG Tacho and it worked a treat :afro:

So tomorrow the steering wheel is coming out so I can fit the new wiper stalk and additional wires then hopefully the clocks

You coded the new clocks in then?? Or have you pulled what you 'hope' is the SKC..........

no I pulled the SKC from my old clocks then logged in via VAG COM as a test :afro:

The old skc code is not needed to code in the new clocks I thought?

You need the new code for the new clocks, the only info you need from the old clocks is the mileage isnt it?

Which is what Neil linked to

Slightly off topic but what do you need to code an immob2 set to an immob2 car  :undecided:
Title: Re: Cluster coding for a dummy...
Post by: Wazzzer on 02 August 2012, 17:57
Not sure myself mate but it's probably the same as immo2 to immo3, just the SKC for the new and the soft codings and mileage from the old cluster
Title: Re: Cluster coding for a dummy...
Post by: old_n07 on 02 August 2012, 19:17
Yes just the SKC as all you need to do is code the keys to the cluster :afro:

Do you need new glasses  it says at the top "the SKC from the old cluster isn't needed"

Doh i meant no you dont need the skc code.  I was answering the first question.....

Equally it doesnt matter as the codes i pulled from the new cluster didnt work.......

Jamie's cluster mate   i tried coding in an immob2 but he didnt have the SKC code.  We put the new clocks in, connected vag tacho and pulled a 4 digit code.  Then followed the guide (added a 0 before the 4 digit code) but it wouldnt have any of it  :undecided:

That immo icon has gone now mate, dunno why it popped up like that
Title: Re: Cluster coding for a dummy...
Post by: old_n07 on 03 August 2012, 15:19
VT doesn't like some of the older clusters, you can try selecting VDO old from the cluster type but if that doesn't work you can get the SKC with Vag K+.

Did you check the lock out timers in the cluster Rhyso? if they are active then you can't do anything until they have timed out, you just have to wait even if you have the correct SKC :afro:

Although if you have a the correct virgin code dump to hand you can flash the cluster with this then retry the coding but you will need to extract the skc again as it will be different after flashing with another code file.

Where do you think I got the idea from

I did want the inverted displays like you've got but Ray said it was a nightmare to do so I held off on that one

I've just changed the lit needles so the gauges come on at the same time now as you can see the LEDs in the daytime :afro:
Title: Re: Clocks are in with MTE and lit needles!
Post by: old_n07 on 05 August 2012, 17:03
Looking good Wes, those white LED's are bright you'll need sun glasses in the dark

Glad you sorted the coding out, not too hard to do is it

I was surprised how easy it was mate

Thanks for your help, wouldn't have been able to do it without your guidance :afro:

I've even been at the v-dub festival flashing eeproms for MTE and illuminated needles
Title: Re: Clocks are in with MTE and lit needles!
Post by: old_n07 on 05 August 2012, 17:18
Just make sure you keep a backup of the standard eprom just in case, it saved my bacon when I flashed Tabs' Bora and it wouldn't start after
