Title: Rat-look - hot or not?
Post by: VDubbleU on 28 July 2012, 16:44
Just joined this forum today as the others I've been using seem to have quietened down... I'm surprised to note the lack of ratted VDubs on here! Where are you all hiding??!

personally i think rat look is best left to those cars that have rust natural, like old beetles and camper vans etc

man made rat look on newer cars does not work for me :undecided:

This to be honest...

I love rats, beetles, buses, hot rods etc.  But there has been many threads on this subject before and some of the cars that get posted are laughable.  The most stupid I posted was a mint mk5 golf wearing a rusty bonnet, roofrack full of sh*t and white walls!... I mean come on now.

Old hot rods and the odd old vdub that are genuine rats...anything else its just looks wrong in my opinion. Fake rust has to be the worst idea known to man.

Yeah definitely agree with you there! I'm talking more the older MK1s and MK2s - those beautiful right angles were made for showcasing a bit of orange rust surely? Adds a nice bit of character

+1 on what f17bad and sound illusion said. on some cars yes on some cars no. and when you tip salty water on to rust it it looks a bit rubish. and i know the car you mean soundillusion. looks pretty terrible

I think you can just about get away with it on lower spec mk2's, its a waste of a good mk2 gti and anything newer is just wrong.

I like the notion of a rusty ratty shell of a car with beautiful interior and a great engine. Appearances can be very deceiving - it's what's inside that counts  :nerd:

forced rat doesnt work - The End !  :lipsrsealed:

do a search, this has been covered a LOT on here,  almost all agree with the comments from Mr Bad and Illusion above.

Sorry Chuff didn't mean to get your goat. Believe it or not I tried a search but found nothing... Just keen to see if anyone had any projects on the go but perhaps I should look elsewhere  :embarassed:

haha glad to hear it. I have indeed been on said forum but I thought I'd broaden my horizons, I like a good look at a tidy specimen as much as the next person. Beginning to think my next GTI might have to be a shiny and sleek one

I think a lot of people on here dont understand the rat look, it isn't just rusty cars, the proper rats are good metal underneath that has been treated so the rust no top doesn't damage it. A lot if not more work goes into a nice rat than just washing and polishing a 'normal' car

Though that being said I agree that it doesn't work on a lot of newer cars and all these half arsed 'rat look' pieces of crap around lately are just plain ugly!

imo this is a decent modern rat

and this is not!

cars  with a rust bonnet  or just all the paint stripped arn't rat they are sh!t.

a proper RAT car  imo  is a car that has rusted / aged naturaly  and some nutter has spent all there money when restoreing it on the motor, so it should be fast,  trying to make a car rat look actulay removes the rat look as your effectivly doing bodywork ( even tho your f**king it up )

a rat look car  is an ol shed that no ones done anything with  as in it looks sh!t and it's not even fast

This....

I am yet to see a rat Golf that I properly like, well I saw one once, it was a genuine barn find that looked fecked, the new owner got it road worthy and left it at that.  However, at no point was he trying to be scene, he just thought that it should solider on as he found it and respected it for doing so.

I like the rat look but it's gotta be done properly with the same attention as you would to a top show car and it has to be the right car/bus for it to work. It's not as easy as throwing paint stripper and letting rust, thats not rat look thats a shed. It also takes a lot to keep but on the right car done properly looks as good as any show car. Well that's what I think

Each to there own, life is boring without diversity...

However, I struggle to understand why you would minic something that developes natural though. Surely there are enough sheds out there. If someone wants to find a knackered mk3 and sort the engine and running gear out then its a rat. To take a perfectly decent golf and screw it up is just insane.

This guy on mg-rover.org made a piss take rover 25 of the so called rat look and purposley went over board with it. its a little track slag though and would give most n/a of its group a run for there money its also won a fair few tropies. His other car is a imaculate zr 2.0 turbo

Works best on aircooled IMO.
But I remember seeing a polo (g40, maybe...) at edition that had been done so OTT that it looked ok.

unless its air cooled rat looks fcuking stupid. artificial or man made rust on a mk1 mk2 mk3 or higher is a joke and a wast of a good car.

END OFF

i like the campers and the beetle above that arnt rusty heaps just look old and aged but still solid.
I DO NOT like some stupid 17yr olds breadvan polo with all the paint taken off and sh!tty skating stickers stuck all over the roof!! it is NOT cool or clever! wonder how the rusty shell would cope in a crash?!?!

and why is there a frigging wheelbarrow on the top of your car?! so you can get yourself home when the car disintegrates on the motorway?!

I think of rat look the same as choppers and the like, if i had a massive living room they would be nice as a piece of 'artwork' in the corner but i wouldn't want to drive/ride one. But all this modern rat look is just a sh!t fad tbh. Look at that scirocco for example, someone put a lot of effort into making that car look like a steaming pile of crap but for some reason its cool
