Title: Intermittent ABS light??
Post by: seanb on 28 July 2012, 09:28
Hi all, had my mk3 gti for a little while now and always been spot on...
Noticed yesterday that the ABS light was comming on and then going off, what appeared randomly. Just wanted to know if the ABS light also serves as a low brake level warning??
I will get under the car during the week and check the sensors, but just wondered if anyone knew if this was a common thing??

Cheers all

First of all get it scanned for fault codes, this should tell you whats up, ABS light does not act as low brake level warning.

if it was low level brake fluid then your hand brake light would come on.

I had the same problem with my 96 passat...

VAG com said left back sensor needs replacing.

Expensive from new..like 70-80 quid.

Solution 1-drove it in the rain and braked hard...light went off...and that is that!

Solution 2-you can go to your local service station and wash the sensor..maybe some grime stuck on it..

They are a concern as my car failed the MOT as the light turned on DURING the test...and thus failed...(picked the right time to do it)

So I cleared the fault code with VAG com (if you don't the light stays on even if the fault has been corrected)

And then drove it around in the rain and braked hard (on a private road)

Then took the car over a bunch of speed bumps on the way to the MOT....light stayed off!

Good luck....maybe you can pick up a sensor from the breakers for cheap..bit of a lottery really!
