Title: How to check engine mounts?
Post by: Wisey on 26 July 2012, 16:27
Made a thread about my car not feeling right. And I have changed the wishbone bush and the dog bone mount. And It didn't make any/very little difference  :undecided:

So thinking it might be the engine mounts that are gone? There is a wee bit of play in the passengers side wheel but only if you put your hands at 3-9 o'clock but no play at 12/6 o'clock. And there is no visible play in the bushes or ball joints  :undecided:

I know that the steering rack is leaking on that side but there is no play in that.

So only thing I think it could be is the engine mounts?

I just started my car from cold while looking at the engine. It looked like it wanted to escape lol

Engine really doesn't move that much   but you can feel vibrations through the car when its sitting idling.

And I also replaced the outer track rod ends maybe 10,000 miles ago, dont know if you can change the inner ones on the golf?  :undecided:

Also if your on the motorway doing 50+ and you turn the wheel sharply left then right you can feel the front wheels 'wobble' as well.

Really out of ideas now, checked all the bolts are tight etc as well and nothing. And not looking to spend alot on it because after I finally find a new car its getting broken for parts

Stuff like bushes etc I have just been doing my self.

Quite handy with a spanner. But just cant see any play in any of the bushes or ball joints at all...

For the sake of the track rod ends they're like £15, so if you can, you might aswel replace them anyway, may make a difference?

Right finally had time to have a proper look and here is what I found.

Slight movement in the passengers side top mount when trying to rock the wheel, but didn't try when the suspension was under load because its on coliovers.

Makes this noise at tickover in 5th :

Warped disc?

And the passengers side engine mount (upside down video )
