Hi,
I'm in the middle of re wiring my house and thought while I'm making a mess I would run some network cable through aswell.
If I run some cat 5 between a couple of wall plates, something like....
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0019QVO5O/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?ref_=sr_1_27&qid=1343136314&sr=8-27 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0019QVO5O/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?ref_=sr_1_27&qid=1343136314&sr=8-27)
Would that work ok?
Anything I need to look out for?
-
personally i wouldnt bother, esp with power link now available. uses your existing power network to send the data required to anywhere in your house. :nerd:
-
Would you not get a better connection with a proper cable?

the actual losses are so small you would be hard pushed to find that a dedicated cable gives you a better conection. Although I would have though the cost of cable + labour would not have been feasible.
Its your call... but why bother when there is a product on the market to cover this exact problem, you are after all still hard wired to your router/hub

any Cat 5e or Cat6 cable will give you double the speed, the fastest ethernet over power at the moment is what upto 500Mbps Gigabit is 1000Mbps a top end kit will cost you ~ £60 for a point to point kit, for the same money you should be able to get 100M of cat6 and the facing plates.
I personally have my house wired up for full gigabit, in terms of throughput difference between the power link stuff, you wont notice any unless you're moving large files around e.g. on the powerlink stuff you'll get around 50MB a sec on gigabit 100MB per sec.
the powerlink stuff does solve a problem but if you're already re-wiring your house then drop a few cat5e or cat6 cables down whilst you're doing it.
-
I agree about the download speeds... but I guess it boils down to how much you really need the full bandwidth available
-
I know I'm able to acquire cable and sockets for fairly cheap and we are doing full re wire ourselves so labour is just our own time.
Would fixing cable to a face plate either end (like the one in previous post) work ok?
Can I run the cable next to power cables without problem?

Can I run the cable next to power cables without problem?
To reduce "noise" I would opt for a shielded cat5e or cat6 cable.
-
Any other tips?

Make sure you earth any shielded cable you use or it will have the opposite effect and amplify the noise .

This may seem like a daft question but is there an earthing wire running through cat 5? Or are you earthing the faceplate

I would run Cat5e everywhere if you have the chance. Dedicated cables are always going to be better.
I would probably run 2 cat5e or cat6 (for future proofing) to each room with a twin socket faceplate, with all the cables terminating in a central place, like a cupboard under the stairs, with plugs on the ends of the cables. Then have a 8/16 port Gigabit switch in there along with your internet router (not all routers run at Gigabit and a dedicated switch will have more ports).
Why run 2 cables to each room?
Chances are that you may have a laptop that can use wifi but also consider your Sky/Virgin box, Xbox/PS3 and you may want a network printer in a room or you may even chose to run your landline phones over the cat5e/6 cables.
In your central place you could also put a NAS device for backup too.

I have run two cables to master bedroom (pc/Xbox) and one to each other room. That way I only have 4 going to router. I can get switch in any room I may want more connections, but don't think that will be an issue.
All in all it's only cost me about 30 quid. I managed to get 90ft of cable for nothing

£30 is cheaper than an 'elegant' alternative...

You'd need two of these at a minimum

Could do with something like that at the back of my TV........
Would they work with existing Home Plugs? Already got one set
-
I'd assume so if they are a Solwise product, but check with Solwise before buying anything.

THIS....
I'm using Comtrend Powerline adapters throughout the house, even to the man shed 30 meters away from the house. No issues at all. :nerd:

Rather than start a new thread ill ask my question here
I currently have my wireless router in the dining room as it gives me the best coverage for the house. From that in have some TP homeplugs which i have one in the living room behind my tv.
As my collection of items has grown that requires / can be connected im looking for a solution so i can have everything connected without having to swap wires etc.
I got my Sky box, xbox and blue ray player. At some point ill add a new tv which will probably require another connection.
My question is can i buy a router, plug it into the homeplug behind my tv and then use it to connect all the devices to the internet??
Moving the router is not an option as the master socket is in my bedroom at the back of the house.
Hope that makes sense :undecided:

You can do exactly that mate. Just buy a router.
Connect the Homeplug to the router, then all your devices to the same router.
A switch is better, it's a router but with better packet delivery

Sweet!!
Any recommendations for a switch??

They're all good to be honest. I like Belkin, but D-link and Netgear are also great

NP mate, they're both good for the money. Will work perfectly

Cool
One last question - much difference in network cables for linking the router and my devices??
-
Nope, all the cables.

Nope, all the cables.
All the same?? Bit of a cryptic answer
-
lol, shoulda finished that! Cables are all the same

Bought the network switch, plugged it in, works a treat
Still waiting for my other network cables mind.......
Cheers for the info Nige :afro:

Nice one mate, glad it works perfectly!
I need to sort something out here really. The wireless won't reach to my PC in Myla's room properly, and I can't run cat 5 cable down there. I tried using my home plugs put they're dropping as many packets as they're delivering.
