Does any1 have any idea how much to take off of the flywheel (8v gti digi) I've been to see some1 about doin it n he said I need to find out how much to take off. He also said he couldn't give me a price before knowing how much to take off. Does any 1 know a ball park figure?
Thanks Doug

take gearbox off

I took my 02A flywheels up to JNL Racing in Markyate. To lighten, reface and balance was £100. You shouldn't need to re-face, so would be £80.
I'd take it to a bloke who knows how much to take off and where, rather than to someone who doesn't know this *key* information!

Diamond hell i take it ur on the isle of wight aswell? Do u no any1 on the island that can do it? Thanks.
-
I bought a lightened flywheel last month from Hotgolf over on club gti , cost was £69 and had to send my old one back to him, its probably about half the weight of the old one !

No. The Balancing is quite specialist. I think Wazzer's had one taken down on the Island and I think DaveIOW has, but neither were balanced.

Not that hard to balance for a machine shop, can be done a drill and a stand "old style" or on CNC machining centre.
If you know of a precision grinders, they should have the the kit to balance it.
A lot easier to send one to someone like hot golf

It's only easy once you know where the weight needs removing! Places with the kit to measure the balance accurately and meaningfully are few and far between.
-
You need a stand, a lathe for a mandrel, a drill and some chalk.
If you have a machining centre its even easier.

And these guys have a balance machine, easy.

depends how accuartly your trying to balance it. need the proper kit to do it right
-
Also, to do it properly it needs to be balanced on your crank with all pulleys etc fitted.
-
I had mine lightened in Freshwater Doug, was an ABF one. Just had the face turned down to knock about 3kg of it.
Tried everywhere on the Island for someone to balance it, but couldn't find anyone.
Stuck it on in the end and didn't notice any vibrations or anything else.
Heard with cast ones it's not essential, but wasn't my own opinion, if I could have easily got it balanced, I would have..

my approach when building motors has been to balance everything indevidualy that can be balanced indevidualy, that way bits can be swaped without haveing to strip the motor for a full balanceing again.
if doing it really properly you need to do the clutch as well
-
Yeah, forgot to mention the clutch, I just pulled the whole crank assembly out of my G60 when I had my flywheel lightened and handed it over with the new clutch. Only cost £100 in total.

Castings can vary quite a bit, structural uniformity and how they are handled and machined after the casting process is key to their natural balance. Billet machined parts are more uniform and balanced but trade strength for this over the cast parts.
I would say a Cast flywheel would be more likely to require balancing, saying that most cast engine parts are pretty good as this makes economic sense for VW to get it right in the first place.
PM me next time your stuck for a machine shop, I am well connected

I also used hotgolf for mine, cant remember the cost but very happy with it
