Title: Mk3 VR6 - The d!ck bonnet vr - broke my sump virginity
Post by: leigh_harty on 23 July 2012, 23:14
Picked her up october 2011 pretty much standard. Had lowering spirings, miltek decat > scorpion system. Mk4 style headlights

Claimed 180K on the clock but the mileage on the mot (feb 2011) was at 198k so who knows. Doesnt have the origional clocks in

How she looked like:

First thing was to chuck away the sony explod - Alpine will only suffice and with built in parrot bluetooth its a winner

Next was upgrading the front speakers and tweeters including crossovers and where amped up.

Didnt really touch the car till boxxing day 2011 where the polishing began.

Was completely smooth, not a single dimple before the polishing really started

1st came the corse paste

Then the fine compound - heres a contrasting shot:

And the finished (main bit anyway) atricle:

Mot time Feb this year. Did rear brakes, pads and bearing. Front EBC discs and green stuff pads.

Failed on rear bearing - just needed tightening up

Patch of welding - Nothing major but gave it ago

Rear lowering springs had been cut! Some dodgy gits out there!

So sold these:

And bought these:

And sailed through its MOT... even with a decat  :lipsrsealed:

Thank you

It took me 2 days in total, a lot of cleaning and my mate has a sand blast cabin too which I played with for some time

I want to get a 2.9 inlet next and have a go at porting it alittle bit, then move on to some head work. I still have my origional head so can play about & keep car on the road

But this is all pipeline stuff

Im speshul leave me alone  :embarassed:

Anyway now im on the laptop again:

Last april after a day of 'spirited' driving (used a tank in just over 1 hr!!) i started the beginning of the death of my engine...

Small amounts of blue smoke quickly turned into more noticable smoke so i presumed that i needed to change my stem seals so instead of taking my car of the road i bought another head and started stripping it before my carpet was put down:

and the head was just as filthy and coked up as you can see

I also broke the engine in this one - 4.6cc 2 forward gears + reverse. Power wheelies like hell

Also rebuilt the gearbox on it too...

I mainly use the pirate (blue one) and its got a brand new engine in this too.. a 5.2cc r32 engine   sh!t of a shovel haha

Inlet valves all cleaned up

Also attempted to skim the head myself - did a pretty good job if i say so myself, done 3000miles and all is good. There is some pitting inbetween the water veins but thats not to worry

Looks mint mate! Yeah mine was originally a Savage 25. Then went for the 4.1, then chucked in a 4.6 from the savage X. I stuck in a HS 3rd gear using the original GB, so retained the low down grunt for the wheelies, but gave it about a 15% increase top end compared to the standard 3 speeds which were only about 5% increase in the Savage XL.

Never thought about doing that, but to be honest i got bored of fixing it haha

We take ours to formby beach, southport. Has big dunes you can launch them off

Sand probably killed my engine too... i now have the savage piston as a keyring

Little bit simpler to fix than a full size 6 pot though!

I sold that second one about 18 months ago though, spent as much on it in the end as I did on the Golf!  :embarassed:

So after all that effort did it pay off?

Well it ran... eventually. It revved up alot faster than before but still smoked abit, put this down to excess. Took it for a drive and it didnt feel right, maybe it was a tooth out? well it didnt matter, got home and as it was idling on the front.... tap tap tap tap, bang bang bang bang, thud thud thud thud... yes it had dropped a valve - thankfully just the 1

By this time i had been towed to a mates garage to be stripped again

robbed a valve out of my old head and put it all back together again... and it ran sweet... but forgot to put the chain guide in, so stripped the rocker cover and cam cover to fit the guide.. this was 1 hell of a saturday

Some more updating....

After i rebuilt the head more than i wanted too  it was back on the road, drove better than before... but it still smoked

Drove around like this for about 2weeks until i started to lose my mid range, and pretty quickly too, a compression test soon soon comfirmed my suspicions - i should have done this to begin with but hey ho you live and learn.

Soooooooo time to strip again and this time alittle deeper

After i had everything apart, gave the bores a rough down, new rings into place i was ready to re-install... Soon learnt that a standard ring compressor wont work with the vr, the block face is angled different from the bored (hence the V) and broke a ring.... managed to get 2 pistons in by finger  and was painfully tedius and hurt alot, soon broke more this way.

Gave up in a mood and literally threw everything in the boot in an anger rage, was in a garage sunday so had to be towed home. And it stood for a fortnight engine emptied and looking sorry for itself
Title: Re: Mk3 VR6 - The d!ck bonnet vr
Post by: leigh_harty on 29 July 2012, 21:42
Sadly i also learnt that each piston and cap have to be matched perfectly

In the fortnight it was abandonned i got a set of Mahle rings from germany £60 cheaper than i got some from the UK

This is when i purchased every set of bottom end bearings - crank and rod, oil pump and pick up and other bits and bobs

Got a vr ring compressor of a mate at Awesome

Got some Mr Muscle on the pistons and and spent some good hours on them

After working out which cap goes with which piston (choose wrong and crank would lock up when tightened)

Thankfully runs like a dream - over 200k but a near enough rebuilt engine and i can say i did it. Engine will outlast the car so it will either be in a mk2 or i really want a vento vr so who knows... but for now i just continue to kick its head in

In the last couple of weeks ive had to ditch the vr splitter because its just too close to the floor, broke 2 genuines and dont get me started on the fakes, so im currently running a passat duckbill which has given me the clearence i need - sits higher than a cl splitter!! and i can still scrape it on a daily basis  no pics of this yet, lost all my pics of my iphone and have a galaxy s3 now

And a set of these caught my eye down in the clasified's and roughly 10miles from mine down a dual carriage way so was easy to pick up

It was going to happen sooner or later: Its either the sump plug but leaning towards the surrounding of it

Also found my waterleak... the core plug right above the oil cooler has corroded through.... deep breathe

I think I am... might go curb my wheels now

I found my water leak, not as simple as yours but replacing a core plug isn't exactly rocket science.

New sump, plug & washer ordered. Will go shopping for serviceable items and get that done while it's all out.
