Title: Mk III Squeaky Gears When Warm - Any Ideas?
Post by: Hattie on 28 June 2005, 20:32
The Moo has developed an irritating gearbox-related squeak. The local garage looked at him last week thinking it was a linkage problem but can find nothing wrong.

The clutch appears to be okay, there is no noise on pressing/releasing the pedal and it is not slipping. The gears are fine when the car is cold, the problem only arises once it gets warm. There is then a very definite squeak every time I move the gear lever, in all gears. No crunching involved. The gearbox becomes a little notchy but nothing very significant.

Any ideas what it might be? The Moo is back in dock tomorrow for a new timing belt so a quick reply would be appreciated.

thanks,
Hattie

if the squeak is only there when its warm/hot it is obviously something affected by the heat- sorta stating the obvious i know!
but with that in mind, try to work out what order things get hot, it may help to locat the prob'.
also is the squeak a squeak, and does the noise def' come from the linkage or is it frome something else that happens at the same time eg clutch pedal, engine mount moving-see my post!- exhaust movement.
hope this is of some help.

Just in case you haven't sussed it yet, my mk3 GTi did exactly the same its where the gear linkage bush sits above the exhaust downpipes, it heats up as the exhaust gets hot and starts to squeak. try some high melting point grease on it (if you can reach!) or buy my vr6 they are cable operated so dont have the problem

I thought all mk3's had cable selectors?

Does sound like a linkage thing like franco says. If so its probably one of those plastic snap cap things, so prize it apart and put the high temp grease in.

If not try renewing the gearbox oil.
