Title: Kayaking
Post by: Horney on 23 July 2012, 20:11
Went Kayaking with MrsH for our anniversary on friday and properly enjoyed it. I generally hate any kind of exercise but this is something I can enjoy and get a bit of a work out. Result! Anyone else on here into this? Thinking of buying a couple of cheap 1 person rigids and throwing them on the roof of the MG for days out.

Looking at these ones: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350557106308&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

Not really into kayaking myself, I was into Piragüismo "Spanish" when I was younger, which are very fast, long and very narrow closed cockpit kayaks.

If you want to do river trips down around this area then let me know. There's a company operating at our pool called seahawk kayaking and they do trips in christchurch and in keyhaven. They charge £35pp for the christchurch and £25pp for the keyhaven trips.

Spent two weeks at the in-laws right at the end of the gorge in Saint Martin D'ardeche, was wonderful, kayak paradise

Proper good fun. Love it. Great work out for the shoulder and back, time to get massive I say Horney

My brother and dad did the same route as the Cockleshell heroes a few years ago, they bought all the kit and a kayak each for not too much and still used it at weekend etc. Do it for sure!

Depends what you want to do. Sea kayaking is cool but dont dismiss river canoeing either.
Can sometimes be too rough on the sea.

Imo you'd be best off buying a decent 2nd hand canoe which you could carry gear and stuff in rather than spending it on a couple of sit-on-tops.

That's the plan, there's some good river and canal action round our way.

I have looked at enclosed kayaks but the sit on tops just seem like a better option for beginners, we can always upgrade in the future.

It's the sit-on-tops that've caused a surge in popularity in kayaking recently.  Bloody things are everywhere down here.  No need to learn how to eskimo roll, or deal with pesky things like spraydecks any more.

Pussies.

we were using these down in cornwall... http://www.oceankayak.com/kayaks/single_kayaks/frenzy/ (http://www.oceankayak.com/kayaks/single_kayaks/frenzy/)

very stable and much fun on the open waves... we did some (unsuccessful) mackerel fishing from them too... which was relaxing. they're good for exploring bays and bits out of the way, plus you get to see wildlife and the like which you might not see from shore

i grew up with the standard enclosed kayak's with a spray deck, i would be happy using either though

recommend that you factor in getting yourselves decent wetsuits if you don't already have them... keeps you nice and toasty and will extend your year round usage if you get a spring/autumn suit ;)

Should have got the estate version of the Rover.

Or a camper.

Estate would have been good for the roof bars but I just didn't like the look of the MG wagens, they also seemed to be lower spec as a rule as well.

I'm currently looking at getting a 5' x 4' box trailer that is missing it's sides and floor which I can convert into a Kayak trailer.
