Title: Snap off Steering Wheels
Post by: mrwotto on 28 June 2005, 20:05
Sent the mk2 into my local mechanic today to get the ingnition switch replaced, went to collect it after work with carrie, drove both cars back to my mums house and she mentioned that the steering wheel was a bit "wobbly!".

So I investigated further, and much to my horror, the steering wheel came off

After a little more investigation it became apparent that the mechanic had decided not to refit the nut that holds it in place.

Am just glad that it held on till we got to my mums, as it could have been very nasty indeed.

"The wheels really come off this time" is a quote used alot at our place.

All I can say is that Carrie was lucky not to have had a very nasty accident.
Mega apology to be expected along with some sort of freebie as goodwill?

Thats shocking mate . If Carrie had pulled the steering wheel towards her whilst driving it would have come straight off the spline.................glad she got it back ok and without incident.............I can't believe the mechanic missed puting the nut on! I usually leave it within the steering wheel recess so you can't miss it when puting it all back together.

Steering wheel has been sorted now, he found the nut in his socket that he used to take it our with, totally dumb founded by his negligence tho.

I am just glad no harm was done as a result

Thankfully carrie is ok, just can't believe he "forgot" to put it back on, it's not as if is an extra bolt that is not really required!!!!
