golf gti 1.8t
2003 AUQ
86,000 miles
problems still to solve..... timing slightly out, been like this for a while, fault code camshaft sensor, speed sensor, inc
hi i have a whining noise coming from the induction area of the engine not belt side
there is no noise while ticking over until i rev up and bring the turbo in but there is no smoke from the turbo
sounds like a belt catching and gets louder when reved up, car runs fine and no fault codes
the day before i recived my new recerculating valve and fitted it road tested and everything was sweet
next day from work did a ew laps of the town then the whining started, pulled over and herd the noise coming from the
recirculation valve area.
replaced my old recirculation valve and the problem was still there.
removed my induction filter from the maf and still the same noise
checked for cracks in pipes everything ok, then checked the maf and air flow and fault codes on vagcom everything ok
any ideas?
could something come loose on the belt chain??
turbo whining maybe???
-
sounds like the turbo, as far as im aware they all whirl when rev'd nothing to worry about.
-
Fix the faulty and go from there. Your car might want a upgraded turbo /k04,ko3s. :nerd: its letting you know.
-
had another mechanic check my car today and the noise is defently from the turbo
he said it sound as if the fan blades has came loose and catching the body while reving up
its defently not a normal turbo sound.
very a loud squel/whine like a chipmunk getting f**ked by a pig!lol
but no grinding sounds
could the turbo need a service or is it better just to replace it?
if i need a new turbo could a k04 turbo just fit stright on without any other mods??
-
k04 is a lot of work mate a k03s its a bolt on job
-
very a loud squel/whine like a chipmunk
You sure the DV is the right way round

DV should work either way, just louder when fitted in the opposite way i think
-
update..
cambelt fitted found the engine was a tooth out bringing up camsensor fault and engine speed sensor
job done
checked the orignal dv was the right way and yes it is
cant really get it wrong
seen two mechanics today both looked puzzled by the noise
one said it could be a bit of plastic in the intake...dont think this is the problem cause it would have to pass the filter amd maf
then maybe the oil pickup pipe was blocked for the turbo and it was short of oil
then the other mechanic said that the bolts come slack on the turbo or the gaskets blown and is a common fault :undecided: :undecided:
-
The loud chirp type noise is what happens when DV wrong way is all
glad your all sorted

lol
-
i wish it was sorted  still got the noise and its driving me mad
checked the gaskets and there is no signs of damage
checked the bolts were tight and they are so im stuck for ideas
its like a loud squeel through the induction, no rattles or grinding noises and no smoke
-
you got a way of uploadin a vid m8 so we can hear it
-
year ill make one tonight and put it up on youtube
ill try and put a link on here

youtube title...... golf gti 180 turbo noises
hope this helps
you can hear it right through the induction pipe
think the turbos on it way out :(
-
sounds like something is split and sucking air in somewhere to me, check everything!
Both sides of the DV, the vac pipe on top of the dv (make sure you are using 4mm ID tubing) and its tight (also what have you split the vac pipe off to takeoff to the DV)
very odd for it to still be there after changing the DV as it rules it being knackered out
-
update the puck blows both ways!!!
-
can anyone tell me the proper name for the hockey puck under the receculation valve please?
-

gutted never gave it a thought just rushed out to try and fix it asap
and the part doesn't solve the problem
tryed the new puck and i can blow both ways so i fitted it and its made no difference
if i take the boost controler plug off the noise is quieter but theres no boost
so its boost related
few mechanics have checked the car and they are puzzled they gess to fit a new turbo but im not convinced :undecided:
anyone help?
-
cars a way for a smoke test tomorrow
ill keep you in formed with the news
might get a manual water boost gauge fitted to check how its boosting
-
get the TIP off at the turbo end and see if you can wiggle the shaft about at all
-
get the TIP off at the turbo end and see if you can wiggle the shaft about at all
im not sure how to get it off?
ive had the car for a smoke test today and no leaks
time for a new turbo :(
i was told today that the AUQ engine has a ko3s turbo is this right?
-
you just need to pop it off where it joins to the inlet on the turbo, best done from under the car. My guess from the noise is worn bearings which will mean your compressor wheel will move in/out and side to side. The noise is generated as it is out of balance
Yes the AUQ has a K03s

Thats plenty mate,
Mine made this noise when I fitted the k03s to my AGU, Turned out the pancake pipe weren connected tidy and blew the pipe off lol Quick fix for though.
It could be soo many diff things, Just take the turbo intake pipe off and check the shaft yourself its a 5min job literally.

its down on the drivers side of the engine m8 on the inside of the wheel kinda, just follow the piping from the throttle body throught the intercooler and ul see it.

update.........
 1 bent fin
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8011/7662375386_e9d30778a5_m.jpg)
no play and spins nice, cant see any marks on the blades or the housing
ordering new k03s turbo tonight
-
not tried bending it back?
Looks like something has dropped in there IMO

aye the thought crossed my mind, even had the thin nose pliers in my hands but all my m8s were shaken their heads!
im thinking maybe crankcase pipe carbon deposit has shot through to the induction and hit the blades
or my aftermarket filter has drawn a little moist water? time to give the engine an oil flush and original filter ansd housing back on i think :embarassed:
-
Definately foreign object damage, or someone has done it when fitting a TIP at some point I would try bending it back as Wazzer has said, especially if nothing else wrong with it, or just replace the wheel rather than the whole turbo especially as you dont normally know the history about other second hand turbo's.
-
What you got to lose
-
What you got to lose
nowt lol but its a highly balanced unit so even if i did get it stright it might be a little bit out of balance and end up damaging the seals and bearings
could i just take the nut off slide the compressor wheel off and replace it with just the tip off???
surely some one will have an old k03s unit with bad bearings and a good compressor wheel lying about or will this not work?
-
you've just contradicted your argument
if you did manage to get another wheel it won't be balanced to the exhaust wheel so you'd be in the same position. I would bend it straight as poss and see how you go, can't be any worse than it is now
-

:embarassed: dohh didn't think of that
but wont that weaken the blade and may snap off and go through the engine?
-
should be ok if you do it gently with a bit of heat
-
should be ok if you do it gently with a bit of heat
how hot would you recommend?
drive for 30 mins then try
or warm it up with a lighter for 30 seconds :undecided:
-
think i may have found the cause of my bent turbo blade

what do you think?
