Just took a picture of this bad boy whilst walking the dogs.
It's about 1.5 inches long.

Never seen one of these round our way. First thought was honey bee. No.
A quick google says it is probably a transverse flower fly, or hoverfly as they are commonly known.
However, all the pics of said flys don't match the markings on the abdomen on mine.
Any entomologists out there?

holy sh!t just had one of them on the car whilst i was trying to get in they fooking huge :shocked:
like you i just thought it was some type of large wasp or summat

not as big as this thing i heard hovering like a helicopter in the garden. Stinger alone was an inch long. think its a queen wasp

edit: just found out it is a giant wood wasp :laugh:

Just had one of these fly into the house! :shocked:
Kin sh!t meself! Opened up the patio doors and closed it in the conservatory door, and thankfully it flew out! phew!
