Title: Royaly f*cked.
Post by: kempie on 19 July 2012, 11:09
Hit a lamp post the other night, & since then, the front wheels squeal when he turns right, had a look under the car, definitely isn't the tracking road, and he can't see anything else wrong with it. Nothing looks bent, from what he can see, and he doubts its the wishbone.

Booked it in for him to get it looked at over the weekend, but do any of you lovely fellas have any idea what the f*ck it could be? As much as I love the car, and know a hell of a lot about the damn thing since I got with him, he's getting on my sodding nerves missing his car.

(Loads of you made jokes about the words 'me or the car' when he posted last time, I'm not THAT mean, if I was, I wouldn't offer to wash it while he's not using it ...)

I'd look at the wishbone first. I've smacked a kerb and it bent like a banana

Gah!

How much is it to replace? And would he be able to do it himself?

I brought a pair of wishbones complete with all mew bushes and balljoints and a pair of anti roll bar bushes for £30 on ebay came from germany . Arrived in 2 days. Fitted myself, nice easy job to be fair. Only hitch i had was one of the old bushes had siezed in really bad but it came out in the end

Why thank you Len :)

So he could basically get it done within a couple of days without a hitch as apposed to spending hundreds, I like this idea!

Thank you :)

Aye Gav, that I do. Don't think I did too bad a job either considering I've got a potential vdub baby on the way - if he's anything like his father anyway lol - and kicking every time I bend down haha.

Len, everyone makes more sense than him! ;) ~<3

Joys of being bi. XD

Since I managed to move the car appointment forward, he's since had a phone call & it's the wishbone - but even though he hit the passenger side, the guy said the drivers side was damaged too?

Not sure if he was saying that because it was true or because he knew if he could, he could charge and arm & a leg to get it fixed? Still, he sounded disappointed when Ben told him that he has a golf down the road he's stripping for a mate. At least he didn't cost him to get it looked at.

Are wishbones easy to get off/on? Providing the weathers nice & he can get to the now, moved to a friends house because someone tipped the council off it wasn't taxed golf, he'll be working on it tomorrow.

Ha! Who needs a mechanics course, I've learnt more about golfs from this site than I probably would about any car at a college :P

Thought it would have been a wishbone, shouldn't be too bad to change either.

Mrs Kempie needs to learn to drive first lol! Not with baby brain though! It'd be disastrous! :P

He said it's just a case of un-doing some bolts then doing some more up, I assume he's right Trog? :)

Haha, that I do Gav! That I  do!

Right, the car & wishbone are very close to being thrown across the street. He can't get the old one off because there's a bolt he can't reach? Seriously, I will pay in like tea or something if someone can help >.<

It's cool! Found a garage that's willing to actually fit it & not charge an arm & a leg to order one in etc. :)

So, after all that - nothing wrong with any of the suspension arms, nothing is bent - just the tracking is off. And that can't be done yet because one side of the car is higher than the other :P

Going back to my pregnant lady phase - is it safe to drive if the tracking isn't done yet? Turns out, it's just the tracking thats buggered after all that, but his suspension is higher on one side than the other, and he's struggling with changing that right now. But he's took the car to work with him so he doesn't have to get the bus...

Is it alright?

If its just one wheel that is higher then that is a bit of a problem, but not really serious.
Bad tracking will just scrub the tyres, so looking a buying new tyres sooner than he should have done.
