My old man is still going through his mid-life crisis and is getting a mk6 gti. But he lives in a rural area so wants to know if anyone has the 18" alloys with thicker tyres, to protect the ride and alloy scuffs? Will it work?

I don't understand the question.
Do you mean 18" wheels which would normally have 225/40R18 and your old man wants to run something like 225/50R18 on them? :undecided:
-
Wouldn't that mean the speedometer would need recalibrating due to the radius changing? Why not just go for 17" wheels or 18's with ACC?
-
Having a higher profile tyre should not cause any clearance issues as there are plenty of lowered cars driving around. Lowering reduces the tyre to arch gap in the same way that fitting bigger tyres would. However, fitting tyres with a larger rolling diameter will increase the gearing and in turn make the speedo read under.
He would be be better off keeping the 18's tucked up safely in the garage and fitting a set of 17" wheels with the more comfortable 225-45-17 tyres.

You beat me too it Jimble.
Also, how rural an area does he live in? I'm out in the sticks a fair way and I have managed not to damage my 18's...yet.
-
... and it would look SHOCKING having 225/50's on 18"s lol

I think he meens rim protection on the tyre wall.
It has been discussed before.

Alloy gators would protect the rims, but not do anything for ride comfort, that's why I guess he wants higher profile tyres.

I live in a rural area he will be fine with the standard tyres

17" wheels is the answer as has been suggested, had this size on my MK5 and they will give you that extra tyre protection needed

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 Tyres actually create a slight lip that surrounds the edge of the 18 inch Monza wheel. As i discovered again today this lip was sat against the side of the kerb until I moved the car again when parking.
If the lip wasnt there Im sure there would have been scuffing.
I really think the GTI needs 18 inch wheels so would still put up with this risk otherwise.
Setup 225/40/18
I can post a pic if required.

or get yourself some of these

Agreed!
I never get to close to a curb tho...as I get as close as I will allow but then if needed I will open my door to make sure I'm ok...you won't find me curbing the monza's, there far to expensive to allow a slip up!

guys many thanks for the responses, I have forwarded them onto him, so lets see what he thinks. At least we've got the goodyears and alloy gators to be looking at. I think its got to be 18s on the mk6, the 17s dont do the car justice. But he might be after better ride rather than style, so we shall see. Thanks again and in the mean time, if anyone out there has got any other ideas, please send them on. Cheers.

You could try a slightly wider tyre e.g 235/40/18 as used on other VW models. The tyre will be wider than the rim so could help protect the rim?

No new ideas here, just a huge cheer for your old man'. The GTI is not a bad way to overcome mid-life crisis  thumps up
