Title: finding out bhp through maf reading
Post by: nath20vt on 17 July 2012, 01:14
hi everyone, found out a few weeks ago about using the maf readings to find out bhp, didnt know how true it was so been experimenting with my car and a few other mates cars aswell and found it to be pretty much perfect, mines completely standard and got 148bhp (pretty much perfect for age of engine ect) mates cupra R came out at 247 bhp and was rolling roaded at 251 so it is pretty much bang on, just wanting to no does the method only work with vags? i.e take the maf g/s and divide by 0.8 or does it work on other cars aswell my mates got a astra vxr and wants me to do it for him but not 100% it will be the same for his car, also does it work on the vags diesels or is it simple just for the 1.8 turbos.

do you need to actually drive the car while doing this, or can you do it while stationary?

Driving

Full throttle run in 3rd gear to the red line.  The MAF values should climb to a peak.  Take this figure and divide by 0.8  :nerd:

Thanks  I thought it had to be done while driving. I just went out and tried to do mine with my son doing the readings, but the laptap's battery died no sooner than we pulled off the driveway

Will try again tomorrow. I see on the Ross Tech sight it says you can do it in second gear! Is it better to do in third then?

3rd is better as the car is under more load

Also log the figures and make sure they climb is a nice linear fashion.  If it fluctuates up and down it will mean you have a problem though not necessarily with the MAF.

I logged a 1.8T the other day and the DV was causing the MAF readings to fluctuate

When you say "log the figures" is there a button on the free vagcom to log them, I think there is  :undecided: I presume that will store them on the computer

Not 100% on the free version but there should be a log / start button yes   That creates a file which is stored under the Ross Tech directory on your hard drive

OK, thanks  Once I have done it I will report back what my MAF readings say on this thread.
