So after looking for ages I saw this on the bay. As it turned out I didn't go and look at due to the p!ss poor weather and took a chance, paid up front and had it delivered last weekend
So a week in and surprisingly it has started on the button every time, nothing has fell off or broken.......So far so good
It's not perfect but not to shabby considering the money involved and the roll cage will go when I have time to have a look at getting it out. Anybody know the car ????

Welcome to the Mk2 section  car looks nice, can you get some better pics up?
Thom
-
If it ever stops chucking it down I'll get my proper camera out and take some better snaps
For now here's another that was quickly taken with my phone.

Welcome M8....
Is it a GTI or a Driver?? Not that we really care that you have to own a GTI to be on here...
Just that your car screams to me that its a either an early car with big bumpers or it a late spec driver with big bumpers...
-
It's an older GTI tarted up with big bumpers.
I know some of the purists here won't like that sort of thing but I'm not bothered, the average bloke in the street that I drive past won't have a clue one way or another.

Loose the front grille & brow and put a Quad back on and it will look Minty Cool!!
-
The grill is the one thing that so far a few people have commented on but again I quite like it the way it is, maybe I'll pick up a spare original at some point and try it. Its got some sort of headlight conversion wired in so not sure how much if any of the original set up is there, not really had time to have a proper look just yet.
-
How are those aero wipers working out for you?

Fine, getting plenty of use in the week or so I've had the car, all it has done is chuck it down up here, went out on Friday for an afternoon on the lash with Big M and had to go and buy a coat !!!!

I hope that's not an HID kit and just the more common relay upgrade that many older golfs benefit from.
Nice car BTW, as already said, only thing i'd change is the grille.

It is an Xeon HID kit but at least I can see where I'm going at night.

Xenons in reflector headlights? Tut tut.
Seriously, get a quad grille, fit all 4 lamps with nighbreakers and fit an uprated loom to get the full 12V to them. Not only will you not dazzle everyone coming the other way, you'll be able to see where you are going much better, as your headlights will be able to focus the light onto the road properly.

+1
Note; HIDS in MK2 Lights is now a MOT Failure!!

It came with a years test and no advisories  so again not to bothered, if the local plods give me a pull I'll act dumb, not usually to difficult for either of us

TBH I just liked the look of the car, it sit's right all be it that it has next to no suspension travel and even though Big M's teeth are screwed in it nearly shook them out !!! and it's reasonably tidy so will do for a bit of fun at the weekends and if it ever dries up maybe a couple of shows here and there.

If you're sure they're HID's in there then yes.

If you're sure they're HID's in there then yes.
Pretty sure, there is a box behind one of the headlights that says something about high voltage and xeon on it and the lights are an almost bluey white colour when on. I haven't really had time to have a proper look round. I'll take a quick snap later.
On a more serious note I don't really know anything about whether they are legal or not on an older car but so far they have not been an issue and I've been scooting around all over in it since I got it.

I was hoping you'd get the hint from the previous messages, especially when the MOT fail point was made. If you take it for it's next MOT to a reputable centre. it will fail. This has been covered a lot in this forum. They are illegal on your car and all cars that never had them fitted at the factory. Use the search function on this forum for more info.

Surprised at that, there are loads of older cars running around with them and plenty of kits available to upgrade with. And I'll be surprised if the local plods are all that bothered around here, they are far to busy dealing with important things like real crime, especially looking for the scrote who had it away with my Claude Butler a couple of weeks ago but I'll have a look at changing them at some point.
-
Most if not all "kits" are not complete. The requirement for HID's to work effectively, involves projector lenses (which are required to focus the light correctly, A self levelling system (because of the way the light is focused) and a headlight washer system, also because of the latter.
Your car will have none of the above. Also note that the law has recently changed in an attempt to be more clear on the facts as it has been a grey area for years.
It doesn't matter that other people have them, it doesn't matter that the local plod don't care, it doesn't matter that you are friendly with a local MOT tester who will pass them. Incorrect fitment is a nuisance to other road users and in mine, and many others opinion are deemed dangerous.
I hope you get round to changing them soon.

You're not by any chance a plod in your spare time are you or just concerned citizen looking after my welfare.

-
You probably will get away with driving with them 99% of the time but it will only take one Policeman with a spare 10mins to pull you and probably be picky about something else. There are universal kits all over the place but they are now an MOT failure. The Hella lights fitted to a mk2 are not designed to use the Xeon etc bulbs and cause the light to scatter and dazzle on-coming cars.
If I could I would poke every driver in the eyes who drives with these lights so they know how it feels not being able to see as you drive past them.
I have a 4 light grill on my mk2 with nice bulbs and new wiring and they are sweet as. If your Hella lights are cloudy on theinside they can just be wiped clean by stuffing a rag in there, makes a big difference.

I couldn't possibly say... However, I am concerned for your welfare and those around you. Plus I can't stand illegal modifications on cars, especially undeclared (insurance) ones, not saying that's you by the way.

Okay, Okay...............................I give in !!!!!!!

    Couldn't agree more.... They are just so annoying... and down right dangerous...
Having said that I have fitted them to my 20 Year old Audi S2... But it has proper reflector lens fitted and they do make a great improvement & aren't an MOT failure...

Hmmm, bit hypocritical isn't it?... Without self levelers you are still going to annoy people, no? Also, as far as I am aware projectors for HIDs differ from those for incandescent bulbs.
To be honest, there is still some conflicting statements in the MOT testers bible IMO but there's no denying the fact that aftermarket HIDs are simply annoying on most cars, especially when either done poorly with cheap cr@p, overkill with equipment that you wouldn't even find by OEM or just poorly setup.

Not at all - they have self levelers built in and headlight washers.... Otherwise I wouldn't have fitted them...
-
Well why didn't you say.
Bet that wasn't a cheap mod!

Thanks for the HID debate, if the OP wants to know more on this emotive/enthralling subject. Then please use the "search" function, everyone else knows the drill  or it gets locked

I get p*ssed off with the righteousness of Mk2 members and the boat jokes etc when the difference is actually rather small.
But to see this thread of a new Mk2 (and a good looking one) descend in to a HID discussion is a waste of a new Mk2. A good looking one too.
So +1 on the countdown - let's get back on topic before the thread gets locked...

I don't see any mention on this thread about Mk3 Barges until you posted above...
We are trying to help the OP with useful advise - some of which he may not have known until someone pointed it out....

Oh dear.

Oh dear, seems I've caused a bit of a stir with my first proper post
As you can no doubt see we are 50+ boy and girl racers, we know nothing of these modern rules and regulation. I was driving MK1's when they were New and the mot ticket was just a minor inconvenience once and a while
Anyway let's not fall out, my apprentice has the Daewoo's running tickety boo tonight so I've had a chance to pull it into the workshop and give it a bit of spit & polish. I'll throw up a separate before and after post in the appropriate section later.

^^Ah don't worry about it fella, it's great to have you on here and love the fact the pair of you, and your car are old skool!
HID's are a bit of taboo subject for many on this site, just be thankful it wasn't you that fitted them!
Love the car, I have a thing for black or white Golfs, kind of makes me miss my white MK1.
If you're going to post progress, before and after shots etc, get a thread started in the Dub Rides section HERE (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=45.0) Very popular section for projects which also allows people to give you feedback.
On top of that, many of us double post in the relevant projects section to keep a log of what we've done to our cars without people commenting (only you can post in it). HERE (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=30.0)
To get the above setup, you just need to send JV a short and sweet pm. You can do that by clicking HERE (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=291)
Look forward to your updates.
-
I have to confess to being a fan of the quad headlamps and small bumpers but thats a nice looking car. Look forward to seeing further updates.
-
To be honest not much I want to do with it, I'll get the Lenso' s refurbed at some point as the laquer is lifting a bit on the polished rims and some proper tyres, it has these cheap NanKang (sp?) things that are probably made out of melted down hockey pucks and far to narrow for the rims and lethal in the wet although that seems to be the look at the moment. And if possible I'd like a leather interior it I can pick one up in decent condition.
We'll see it depends how much pocket money Big M gives me.

As you say not cheap but I might get in touch and see if there is a deal to be done
Minor problem, I just noticed it's miles away at the other end of the country from me, probably cost a fortune just to get it delivered

Before yu rush out and buy a leather interior - try a Recaro one for size...
I've had both and a recaro set is 1000 times nicer than a leather interior esp when you dont have AC fitted or heated seats...
HTH
-
Looks straight.
I agree with the recaro's. Had leather but once you go cloth recaro you won't go back. Either get an expensive retrim in leather or find a mint set of recaro's. These old leather seats crack with age.
I dare you to fit an original 4 lamp red grille and try your hardest not to like it. You will end up a purist

Before my VeeDub phase I have to confess to being a long time Ford fan boy  and had numerous 3.0/2.8 Capris, XRs and RS motors with recaro seats, either as original or retofits even one with leather recaros.
I've had a few Golfs as well over the years and three of them had leather, sure not much good in winter and leg burners in summer but a nice leather interior especially a black one looks good in a Mk2 and they can be reconnonlised to look fine. It's like the grill, I want leather so not being put off that easily
Maybe I should have said before but this isn't my first Golf, I've had a few before, two Mk1 Gti's one of them with a cammed 16v motor, a CC Vert, four Mk2's the last one a 90's spec and fully leather up and a couple of Mk2 Jettas, one of those a 16v.
-
The thing with the Mk2 Golf seats is, I don't find them comfortably enough to warrant having leather to sink into. Its not that sort of car.
-
I didn't find the leather seats to bad, I've been in more uncomfortable cars, been in better but they were ok. In my last Mk2 I drove it all over Europe including in an attempt to catch a Ferry a just about flat out run from the outskirts of Prague to the Europort at Rotterdam, just short of 600 miles, and only stopped once to fill up and replenish the stock of Red Bull

I Respect your choice.... But as someone who has owned a few "Super Cars" RS6, S4 Cab, Focus RS, S2 Etc etc... and being of a "Similar Age" (-15 years)
There are 3 sets of seats that stand out for me...
#1 RS6 Recaros in cream/Silver leather with Black piping.... So MEGA comfortable - but it had climate control & Heated....
(Drum Roll......)
#2 Has To Be the Edition 1 Recaro's in the MK2 - Like the RS6 So Comfy but no climate and no need for heated & they fit like a glove... Best £1K I ever spent on seats...
#3 Focus RS....
Worst - MK2 Golf Driver & Audi S2's (fecking side bar digs into your thigh and hurts like feck.... Bought RS2 Recaros but never fitted them).....
-
I Respect your choice.... But as someone who has owned a few "Super Cars" RS6, S4 Cab, Focus RS, S2 Etc etc...

Ok enough of that and sort of back to the topic.
Are there any other interiors fit a MK2, a bloke at work mentioned that he thought a Corrado interior fitted ? and what about a MK3 3 door as there are plenty of those around with leather, I could probably buy a whole car for the price of the interior posted earlier.

I believe corrado interior fitting is a piece of p155 (minus the dash). could be a cheaper option if you can find one you like.
-
Mk3 seats need the bases swapping or the legs bending for front seats. Not sure bout rear bench. There was a guide on matey matey for fitting corrado rear bench.
-
Rado seats do fit nicely but door cards are different so would have to find separately. The Rado rear seats are raised in the middle so you could only fit 2 people back there.
That seller also has a 5 door set of leather for sale which im going to ask him about...... yeah yeah yeah, 5 door, blah blah blah....
-
I got scirocco leather in mine and the front seats are exactly the same as the ones posted earlier. Front needed but of work for the adjusters to work but back went in ok.
60 on seats and 20 on leather dye don't look too bad in mine.
-
Thanks for the info, I have been having a look on ebay and there are a few options a lot cheaper than the £500 ones posted. So just a matter of waiting for something to come up reasonably local
A bloke at work has a MK3 Gti so I'll try and get a look inside it and see what's what.
