Title: adaptor for locking wheel bolts missing
Post by: mailatstevegilesdotnet on 12 July 2012, 10:35
Hello all, I am a new meember having bought my Mk4 1.8 Turbo three weeks ago. Love it to bits so far, but nervous that when I inevitably want to take a wheel off I have no adaptor/key.

Bolts are the internal spline type if that makes sense; contacted VW dealer and they won't sell me a new adaptor, but will remove existing bolts for me and fit a new set for £50 plus labour. Seems steep to me, but I also don't want to get stuck at side of road with flat tyre locked to car and perfectly good spare in the boot...

Any ideas please?

steve

you could drill the locked ones off..... for the sake of £50 I would just get it done

was hoping to be able to buy a key for existing bolts. did this for wife's galaxy a couple of years ago and sure it was only about twenty quid

could always give it a go, but at the very least you'll have to post a pic of the lock nut on here.
most people keep the keys for the exact reason you are experiencing

£50 to supply and fit a new set is not a bad price tbh.

Hurrah for local independent specialists! these guys www.millroadgarage.co.uk (http://www.millroadgarage.co.uk) got me a new key for £15 whilst doing some other work for me.

I will return.

I think he means 50 pound for the keys plus labour, which could work out alot more.

To be clear the VW dealer wanted to charge me labour for removing existing wheel bolts with their own key which they would not sell me a copy of. They then wanted to supply and fit a new set of locking bolts for fifty quid. I never got as far as asking for total price, but with one hour's labour my guess was a total over a ton inc vat. And yet the independent was able to solve my problem for fifteen quid.

Guess where I'll be going and who I'll be recommending going forwards...
