Title: Need Some Help Getting My 8v Gti Running Right In West Sussex
Post by: stu 88 on 08 July 2012, 18:52
I have a early low milage 8v Gti that I got off here not long ago http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=233442.0 and it doesn't run as well as it should! it seems to be holding back?  I've had a 8v gti before so I know there is def something not right!

Does anyone have any idea's?? or anyone in the know able to pop round and have a look? (I have a pub so can supliy beer in return!!) or anyone know of anyone (cheap) in my area who cold take a look?

Thanks

Stuart

Is it generally running poorly at all revs?
Running OK to 5,000 rpm and hitting the limiter?
Running OK sometimes and having bad days?
Starting OK?

Would be worth checking the codes if you can find someone with a scanner - ask in your local. Any VAG group scanner would probably work.

Its hard to explain really! When pulling off in 1st you have to give it some revs or it bogs down and takes a while, it seems to have nothing after about 4000k rpm? it revs upto the red line but doesnt seem to "pull" if that makes sence??

it starts ok, but if I rev it to say 3000 rpm then lift of the revs drop to about 100/200 rpm and sometimes will stall.

It has a de-cat and magnex stainless system and pops and bangs on over run some/most times

Just noticed you did say it pops and bangs.Sounds like the problem i had with mine which turned out to be the coil pack on its way out.Didnt find out what it was until it completely died.

Sort of everyday! I dont use the car everyday!! no miss firing.

Reading the above link it sounds like it could be the MAF?  as it seems to have a loss of power in the higher rev range and throttle response isnt great

Yes got a pub in Yapton, near Arundel/Bognor Regis

Where can I get it "scanned"? do I just ask in any garage for them to "scan" my car?

You can get it scaned as i did but if it is the coil pack it wont show up on there.Changed my maf too and that didnt fix it and wasnt cheap.Id give your throttle body a good clean out first.

Give the throttle body a good clean with carb cleaner, at least half a can. Bet that sorts it

Then what wherry said, at least you know its not a sensor issue, have you checked all your vac/breather pipes for leaks?
