Hi, I'm new to this forum, hope someone can help...
My 1991 MK2 Golf GTi 8V has over the last week or so developed a worryingly strong smell of petrol both inside and outside when it's driven. I took it to a mechanic on Monday but he's adamant there is no leak anywhere. He did acknolwledge however that the car did in fact smell strongly of petrol. The petrol gauge is also behaving ok and I don't seem to be using more fuel than usual.
Unfortunately I am not exactly mechanically minded and I was hoping that any of you guys might have any ideas???
Help, the smell is knocking me out and I'm slowly getting paranoid that it's going to blow!

in the boot under the carpet u have a fuel hose going into ur petrol tank, check thats not leaking as mine was and smelled bad, hope this helps

Ok, I will do that. Thanks for that. If it is leaking, is it an easy job to replace it?
Seems that lately I've had nothing but trouble with her!

Check the fuel hoses especially the feed to the injector rail . Even if the the clip is tightened fully the can still leak but it may not be that visible as the fuel evaporates especially when the engine is hot . I have come across this a lot on the mk2 8vs with Digifant engines.
GET IT CHECKED A.S.A.P. Hate to see it go up in smoke !

I will do, I have it booked into another mechanics for Monday morning so I'm hoping that the problem can be sourced. Things always seem to go wrong just before I want to sell her too!
Thanks for the advice mate, it gives me something to go on and hopefully I'll get it sorted. Then I won't be driving around in something that smells like a BP forecourt!

Agree with Vento, this is a know fault, change the clips on the fuel rail ASAP.
