Can anyone shed any light on this or had a similar problem ?? Last week my 8v had a new head gasket. Head was skimmed and pressure tested. New water pump, new timing belt and tensioner and new dizzy, dizzy cap and rotor arm. Since I have had it back the car runs great until I stop and turn off the engine. I can then watch as the expansion tank just emptys. I have no leak from the engine or any pipes. I have spent two days checking for problems and can see the water comes back along the retuen pipe into the bottle and literally out of the overflow even though the bottle is not full. I then changed the throttle body and new expansion tank just in case. Last night I flushed the system and then run the engine warmed up with the heaters blowing hot with the return pipe disconnected. The water gets round and runs out the return pipe as it should. I then reconnected the pipe and the car ran great back home. Let it cool down and took it out with no problems. Stopped for fuel with no problem and took it home. Went to work this morning, came home dinner time and went back to work with no problems. Came home tonight and parked up and the water came out and the bottle emptied. Getting really fed up with the car now as the clutch is also noisy and was only replaced in Feb so is under warranty but the car seems to spend half its life in various garages and my patience is wearing very thin at the moment. Can anyone help ?? Also forgot to mention the car does not overheat at all !!!!

Did you spend plenty of time massaging all the air locks out of the system?
Does there appear to be any evidence of any oil/water mixing in any places?

Oil and Filter were changed and is very clean and water is very clean. No pressure in pipes anywhere. Water getting around system and heaters red hot so thermostat is not at fault. Obviously pump is working. Everything is great until I turn off the engine.

Still sounds like air in the system, try running it with the rad cap off, for a while.

Done all this and really got the hump now. If it is air then its bloody well hidden and refusing to budge !!!!! :angry:

Did you get a new cap with the tank? The cap regulates the pressure in the coolant system (assuming you have no leaks).
No pressure is wrong - you should have around 10 psi when up to temperature if the system is working correctly. You will definitely feel this in the top hose - it should feel firmly inflated but not rock hard.
My gut feel is get another cap to see if that works. A cheap place to start too.

Try the O-Ring that sits inside the cap, They tend to loose shape, My VR6 Kept on doing this so i replaced the O-Ring and it's never gave me a problem after that.

had same issue. After parking up all the water would p1ss out. I even had the blue cap but after opening it i realised thatg the seal had melted. Replaced with a used blue cap and all was good. Try a used blue cap but check to see if the seals in good order

Think I have found my problem.......or should I say problems !!!!!!
Three problems conspiring which meant it would be virtually impossible to spot unless the water disappeared like mine. The expansion tank cap was indeed shot. Bought a new one from GSF for £3.75. Now got pressure in the system.
Changed the temp sender just out of curiosity as I had no fault codes. Left it to run and came back to find the guage right up by the max. So that was shot and turned out to be a good £8.75 spent at GSF. But this also showed that the fans aint kicking in. They were working before the head gasket change but its gone in the garage to be rewired to an ignition live for permanant cooling for me. Hopefully this will be the end of the problems for me as the entire coolant system has been changed (except for thermostat which is obviously working).

I didn't really think it could cause a problem until Wayne pointed it out earlier so may ring the garage and tell them to sort it out.

Just a quick update....got the rad fans sorted properly and now hopefully the car will run right for a bit ?? Going to test it out today but got a feeling my clutch will pop soon and not really fussed as it was replaced in Feb and has a two year warranty !!!!!!! Just be nice to have the car on the road more than the ramps :laugh:
