Title: Just had wheels aligned and balanced ..
Post by: Genghis on 04 July 2012, 17:41
by a professional place...after i noticed that one of the front tyre was wearing badly in the inside tread.
Thing is now i get a terrible pull to the right when i'm 'giving it the berries' ( hard acceleration )
then it jumps back left when I take my foot off the gas..
I have quite large 8'' wide 14'' diam wheels with slightly stretched tyres but nothing radical..
It was fine before alignment, now its scary..
Anyone got any ideas. I'm a new mk2 GTi owner.. help!?

dont know much (or anything) about wheel allignment so cant help you on that front, but if you think theyve done it wrong take it to another place get them to check. lots of places give a free "measurement" / check/ what ever you call it. i.e. will get the mirrors/lazers out and tell you if there alligned properly.

O.K. thanks for that .. I will get it checked somewhere else..
After much reading on the web it seems i'm getting tork steer, this could be many things.
After driving the car for last 6 months with very bad alignment, could have maked the problem of worn bushes and or ball joint ends.
Are these hard to replace? Costy? Time consuming?

Anyone?

Try "torque steer" in Google...

Could be caused by a loose front end. Suspect stuff like wishbone bushes, ball joints, strut tops. Think about anything that will move if you got hold of your front wheel and gave it a really good tug towards the front of the car.

Also check the offset of your wheels. If they are not standard this could also cause torque steer.

Bump steer is similar. My old Impreza had this. With standard wheels and well aligned geometry it would get knocked off line by bumps and tramline like a b*stard. Apparently the cure was something to do with the droplinks - I can't remember exactly what now (it was a while ago).

was it only allignment or camber/caster you had done? i tracked mine up and it drove as you describe so had camber done and solved the problem.
