Post by: jims13 on 16 June 2005, 18:46
it has 4E stamped on it, and has a linited slip diff in it

im a bit confused, i no it should have a 2Y stamp on it.

so any ideas what it is out of.

surely not a early gl , 4+E (type thing) vw is it.

did the tried and tested , rev to 5000 dump clutch routine, and see how many lines you leave behind.

thinking the box may be from a maestro ....

Nothing wrong with the box being from a maestro, probably had a easy life .
One way to check if it has a lsd is to jack up one front wheel and with the box in neutral, try to turn the wheel. If it has a lsd it will be very hard to turn, don't mistake the slight drag you will feel as a lsd, it is normal.

The MK2 GTI 16V box has the 2Y code and thats not what you have, check the code you have on your box, it's on the flat casting at the bottom of the bell housing.

hello all, yeah mk1 , did get it uop on the ramps last week and like you said with the car in neutral the wheels wheere hard to turn and they both rotated.

anyways not moaning just wondering what gains im gonna get , would this be a stronger box, thn the normal 2y one. and is it better suited to a larger enginge , as im thinking of going the 2.0 litre route.

cheers jim

The box will be OK for a 2ltr, use a 16v pressure plate and centre plate that matches the input shaft on your g/box.
