Eh? I haven't even voted and I don't think MK1_BOY has been online since this poll was published. Who had you in mind that might be rigging the voting.  ???

i'm a little concerned about the use of gaybar. I keep having a vision of the blue oyster club from police academy.

I bet honest john is a fully paid up member.

I dont mean to be a traitor but the 8v is bluddy slow and doesnt handle very well. Slower than VTR and 106xs is pretty embarrasing. My brothers got a 1.8ls Vectra and even thats quicker than my golf :'(

On its own i might have thought it was ok, but having owned and driven other hot hatches i cant really call it a GTI. :(

Trade it in for a 16v or vr6  ;)

Nah too old!!!!! :P

Quite fancy an A3. How about i screw the economics and buy a 1.8T and revo chip it to about 190bhp. nice.

Whats this obsession with these cars being old, they aren't really that old. I personally wouldn't bother with an A3, as i saw an Audi S4 for sale for 14k locally.

S4's the motor, I nearly got my fingers burnt when I was looking for a Golf I wanted a 16valve went to see a minter 43k on the clock gleaming red, it was a five door but absolutely mint, agreed a price ?5k (2 years ago) ready to hand over deposit but the joker had no log book!  I waited about three weeks as he said it was at the DVLA but it never showed.  In the meantime I saw my 8valve, it had aircon a brand new alpine stereo, mystic blue 3 door, absolutely cracking example cost me more cash but I  fell for it.
Yes i would like something quicker but its getting hold of a VR6 and selling mine without my bank manager having a fit!!
If I see one at a dealers then maybe I will take the plunge, then I'll give VR6 a race!!!

They just feel that little bit too old now (MK3's). Also having been in a friends MK4 Turbo - chipped to 205bhp and absolutely rinsing a VR6 its tempting to go with the times and move up and on.

S4's are fantastic. Just dont fancy the turbo's going as if one goes, then they both have to be replaced as an engine out thing - speaking ?2.5k - ouch :'(

I wouldn't waste your money on an A3, just buy the 1.8T engine (you can get em anything from ?500 - ?2000) then a grand to fit it in your Mk3 (or Mk1 in my case) and you'll have a sh!t hot hot hatch for a quater of the price of an A3 (which looks like a Mk3 golf anyway!!)
Saw a mk1 cabrio with one of these engines in on ebay, totally rebuilt car tho with bare metal respray, new roof and everything.

In fact, I got nailed by a new Passat today and it was a Diesel!!!!!!
Time to start sourcing a 1.8t engine methinks!!! you can get em out of the A3, the Golf, the Ibiza, the Leon and I bet theres loads more mota's with this lump in too, so it can't be too hard to find one in a scrappy with just the engine intact ;)  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I don't think the Mk3 8v is as slow as everyone makes out in all honesty, its certainly faster than a VTR or a 106 XSi. You just have to know how to drive it right :)

And it's still the best looking GTi VW have made. And that includes the Mk5 imo (although the Mk5 has a much MUCH nicer interior).
