I am now the proud owner of a golf gti :grin:
Unfortunately the car does not have the sat navigation or bluetooth setup, instead it has a 6 cd touch screen unit with an ipod connection under the drivers arm rest. I would like to upgrade to sat nav and bluetooth but I am waying up my options:-
New vw geniune sat navigation unit (which I can get fitted for the £1000 mark)
OR
Just use iphone with a cradle as the new iso6 will have a free sat nav which will be amazing and probably destroy built in navigations (price not sure, depends on setup i guess of cradle)
*I read that car companys are already looking at how the phone could work with a screen.
New vw geniune Bluetooth (costs £200ish fully fitted)
OR

To be honest I would prefer less things stuck to my dashboard but I am interested in the options available with my current setup

Most buy the RNS510 on ebay for around £500 and bluetooth for around £150-170 and fit them selves. It will require a VCDS to program various bits as required.

If you're going to spend the money get the genuine Sat Nav - RNS510, I wouldnt get these aftermarket versions. It's a nice thing to have when you come to sell it too, a genuine £2k sat nav unit.

Im just wondering if the built in Sat nav is really worth spending all that money when mobile phones work very well and look likely to become better integrated with the car in the future.

I know I'd rather have a full satnav unit in the car than an iPhone strapped to the dashboard.

I had the RNS510 in my MK6 and it worked very well, however I didn't really need to use it that much so I decided that £2k this time round on my ED35 wasn't worth it. Have a TomTom and satnav app on my iPhone which works really well with the Bluetooth. If you go with the RNS510 you won't be disappointed but £2k is a rip-off which I already paid for once before but not again.

Will the iphone give you traffic details or cut the music to your desired volume so you can hear the directions? The RNS also gives you a 20Gb (I think its this size) hard drive for your music.

The RNS510 is a good integrated unit and I had no issues with it at all except the price. I don't bother with a mount so no messing about as I don't tend to look at the map just listen to directions (yes music volume drops automatically). The RCD510 has traffic announcements so I haven't lost any functionality just the convenience of one unit. Also have an iPod classic in the arm rest so never used the hard drive or CD's. Plus a holiday with the money saved.

It's funny how people rely on satnav nowadays. Young uns theses days don't know where anywhere is. I was reading on another forum, these lads were arranging a meet in Northampton. One Lad from Milton Keynes hadn't got a clue where Northampton was, how to get there, or how long it would take.
I've managed without one for 25 years by just finding my way about the old fashioned way. If I'm going to somewhere I've never been before, I will do a dry run on google maps before I set out, dropping onto Street View at some tricky looking junctions, but that's all the technology I feel the need to use.
I would save your money and stick with the RCD510 and retro fit bluetooth. It's very, very easy to do. You will just need a hand with the coding, but that should cost you no more than a case of Stella to someone local to you with VAG-COM. The RCD510 is a great unit. As said earlier, plug in your ipod or USB stick in the armrest and off you go.

I am on the road for work, and Sat Nav and Bluetooth are the two most useful functions my car has (Leon FR) which I specced in from new.
With my previous MK5 golf I had a retro fitted Parrot Bluetooth and used a Tom Tom One mounted on the screen, equally as efficient but not quite as convenient with the mounting/unmounting to the screen all the time and my biggest annoyance was the trailing power lead.
I have upgraded to an RCD510 in the Golf for £100 and will add the VW Bluetooth module to it at some point, but as the car is only used for short journeys I personally can't justify the need for the RNS510, would much rather spend the money on some LED rear lights :cool:

Yes I love the fact the RNS510 does this automatically, I didn't know it did until it did it on the way back from Devon..I thort I had to press a button or something...it's ace and I'm more than happy that I spec'd it!

I have not bothered with the RNS510 as I love my iphone and it intergrates really well.
You just get in and go with the bluetooth - the phone connects and the iplayer connects. I have down loaded the tomtom app for the iphone and this works really well. When you are listening to music it dims the track so you can here the directions - it also gives you traffic information. I often dont plug it in to the arm rest unless the battery is low on the iphone. When is plugged into the arm rest you obviously cant see the display but you can still hear the directions over the music. So I have a cradle with a power connection but only use this about once a month when the journey is really complicated and I have to follow the direction closely...
The iphone 5 should come out in about Oct with IOS6 and loads of new great features... I would get the bluetooth and the new iphone. You'll get a lot more use out of the iphone for the same money!

Buy it off eBay, fit it yourself (piece of p!ss) and find someone localish with VCDS to code it up for beer tokens! :cool:

Have a look at aftermarket units,got a Pioneer in my ED30 & that has hands free/dvd play back built in.
