Title: R reg mk4 golf gti press show car??????

Hi to all! Someone has offered me a mk4  golf gti in blue on a r reg,they say its a ex press show car and it was the first mk4 golf to come off the production line,it was a prototype as such,he said it has a few mk3 bits in it as it was a prototype and a vw fitted bose sound system,does anyone know if this is true,i can't find any r reg mk4 golfs anywhere???? If it is true would it be worth any money if i can't prove it.many thanks

The Mk4 started on a 1998 S Plate. I think :-\

Thanks,that's what he's trying to say,he said it's a r reg rather than an s reg because it's the first mk4 before the s reg came out.cheers for the reply

Get a quote for it from your insurers. That will tell you if it is a one off (if the story is true it probably doesn't have "type approval").

It will not be a prototype they get crushed, what I suspect is the case is that it was one of a few that were the 1st ones in and they were used for road tests, mag features and uk type approval tests.

The same thing happened with the Skoda Octavia vRS all the press cars were Y plate yet they were not sold until the 51 plate.

I have 2 Autocar road tests from early 1997 and they are on R plates.

It will have some value being an early press car but in real terms is is just a mk4 at the end of the day, if you get the chassis number VW should be able to tell you when it was built, doubt it will be the 1st of the line as they would have produced LHD cars first then switched to RHD.

Volkswagen UK's number is; 01908 601601. I've found them very helpful over the past couple of weeks when I was buying a MK4. They will also tell you the service history the car has had though thier network as well if you ask them :)
