Title: car: dead
Post by: Tazzy on 01 July 2012, 22:17
seems ive lost all electrical power

as i dont use the car for 6 days, i was expecting it to be flat, which it was, disconnected the positive terminal, put the charger on, left it for a bit, conected the the pos term again (this usually just does the job) but as i went to turn the key, there was a 'popping' sound from under the bonnet, when i lifted the bonnet there was a burning smell

ive checked every fuse, theyre all fine, to make things worst, ive cross-threaded the terminal bolt

- what was the popping and burning?

- what shall i do?

- what have i broke?

cheers ta, thanks very moochos

checked, as i have to open that to get to the pos term, i was suggested it could be the flat strips of metal, but they are also in tact

if youve threaded a bolt then chances are the conection between the battery and the terminal wasnt very good and could have been the current arcing across into the termination.

however from the burning smell ide say your starter motors burnt out?

ok, thanks, why would the starter motor die when the car only gets started once a week? :/

I would have thought starting it less is worse for it, gives it chance to sieze up  :undecided:

Just underneath the battery tray to the left. I'd check the cables to it first as they are known to get damaged, easiest way to access starter is from underneath the car as its strapped in with long bolts to the engine.

if anyone is breaking a mk4 golf local in the west midlands, its 23mm wide and 28mm high, its the nut and bolt for the pos term clamp

ive also put the battery on a proper charge and topped it up again

im sure my starter motor has already been changed since ive had it, actually, im positive i have
