Title: Ballast Resistors
Post by: dubstar9 on 01 July 2012, 16:48
Wanted to remove the orange glow from the indicators in the clear section of the rear lights, answer fit LED bulbs. Next problem comes from the low power draw of LED bulbs makes the relay think there is a bulb blown and flashes faster. 2nd answer is to fit a 50watt ballast resistor and bulbs flash at correct speed, so I thought I could fit LED bulbs in the front indicators to remove orange glow there too. Fit LED bulb and no flashy, refit orange bulb and flashy returns, scratch head time!!! :undecided:

I would have thought fitting a ballast resistor of 50 watt draw would allow fitment of LED bulbs all round, am I doing something work or should I just be happy that me US Spec rear lights don't have an orange glow from a coloured bulb :smug:

You can get electronic relays rather than mechanical. These flash at the same rate no matter what current draw there is. Downside is that you won't know when there's a bulb out as they will always flash at the same rate. Loads on EBay ( electronic led relay i just searched for) but not 100% sure what the pin out is on a mk3?

Be Careful with Ballast, get it wrong and your Mk3 might tip over
