hello ray-
I have the exact same problem - 1999 golf gti 1.8t
the same part snapped- got the RAC out to look at it and we tried to cobble together a replacement bit using a blot and some nuts but no luck.
I'm about to attempt the repair myself, did you successfully repair it? Which part did you order? from where? did you remove the airbox? how easy was it to adjust the connector and get the gears to work again? did you need any special spanners etc?
sorry about all the questions this is my first attempt at repairing something like this - any help would be much appreciated...

(http://)also when i have searched for part 46 ( 1J0711761) on the net - it looks very different to the part i need:
(see photo). when you ordered the part was it the correct item?
any help would be much appreciated :undecided:

well i ordered the part at my local vw garage cost about £10 and once i put it on i didnt have to re align any gears

I Replaced the part
I have a 1999 VW golf 1.8 GTI - the part i needed was :
Part No. 1J0 711 256
removed the airbox
and then took the nut off the other gear cable to give me better access
after that it was pretty simple, fits on easily.
