Did VW do an option for an armrest in between the front seats on these cars?

Yes, was standard on the VR6 Highline from memory.

I've just looked at some highlines for sale and yes some do have armrests! Time to save up.

Armrests on a Highline? Not on any the ones I've ever seen. Highlines did come with a raised centre console though with a deep storage pocket. The only proper armrest I've ever seen were made by Votex iirc and they are super rare, not eBay rare... and even then I not sure they were even available in this country originally.
