Title: Abandoned cars and rights of access
Post by: Neo Badness on 29 June 2012, 16:33
Got a horrid KIA dumped outside my unit blocking access. Been there 3days now, left a note last night politely asking them to move which has disappeared but car is still there.
Contacted police to trace owner and they are having no luck also said as it's private property (owned by council) they have no jurisdiction? Asked if I could just move it on a dolly they said technically that'd be theft!?

So what to do? had to come away as there's nothing I can do if I can't get in or out of my unit which I pay a considerable amount for. Seems ridiculous that I can't move it and the police are powerless if given a dodgy phone number.

So suggestions or solutions people. Helpful or otherwise, cheer me up

Do you not have a rope and a towing point on your car?

I'm confused as to the problem here.

Police officer should know the definition of theft.. To dishonestly appropriate property belonging to another with the intention of PERMANENTLY depriving the other of it...

Shove it out your way with force, dont get the police involved... looks liked its been abondoned 'not in your way'

Saying that it may have been stolen and could be a biddys pride and joy....

Flip it on its roof and grind the floor out, using it as a skip or failing that just leave a big sign on it saying 'free to scrap men'

Tap the reg number into AskMID to check if it is insured. If not then it's illegally parked and the Police would be obliged to remove it as if it is SORN then it should be off the road

Even more so if the tax disc blows away from said draft.....
Easiest way is to just move it, if three guys turn up and push it along a bit in the middle of the night that's not your problem

All brilliant solutions. However, transpires that despite assurances to contrary it's the garage across that are taking the piss. Ill be over for a frank discussion with owner tomorrow.

Like D.H said, just drag it to the nearest public road! It will soon be shifted as long as it has no insurance or tax!

I just watched an old episode of Road Wars where a Peugeot estate was parked blocking a right of way and the old bill called for recovery to get it removed.

Where i used to work this used to be problem ,, we just used to jack em up an drag em out the way ,,never had any come backs apart from one guy whos wing got accidently damaged during transit , the footprint was a good indication that someone wasnt happy with him but he couldnt prove anything and we never heard back from him :)

If I had been in the unit with nothing to do then I would probably have moved it myself. However I have had more than enough to keep me busy in meantime.

Got call from Police to say they got hold of owner and that it had broken down and been recovered to garage opposite. So not the owner of the cars fault. I didn't think that it was the guy from the garage as I'd spoken to him previously about him/ his staff dumping cars at my unit.

Went past tonight and even though the garage closes at 430pm car had mysteriously moved from outside my unit to outside his @ 11pm. I'm not very happy that this has happened and whilst I prefer to solve things amicably I am a big lad and easily make my point in a less eloquent manner should the need arise.

Shall have words with garage owner tomorrow.

Owner was unavailable today, but I have ordered myself a nice big sign.

I'd order myself a couple of tonnes of manure and have it delivered to outside his unit

Funny, a friend was just telling me he got a load of top soil delivered from council for his garden for free. Until now I didn't make the connection...
