Title: hesitation
Post by: stainesy on 29 June 2012, 11:46
i have a hesitation at low revs. in say second gear when drivng off or if i give it some welly it hesitates then finaly gets its power. almost like the turbo lag feeling you used to get on old turbo cars but obviously without the power they have

could this be dirty throttle body or something els?

Dirty throttle body was also the first thing that sprung into my mind.

its a strange one as i just went for a drive and it didnt do it. but this morning and sometimes it does. is there any chance that a slitely blowing downpipe or manifold could cause it?

I no but I'm slowly working my way through it all

Also since iv fitted the good exhaust I have noticed like a hot smell if you no what I mean. And the exhaust seems very hot all the way to the back and even the chrome tips feel propper hot. Don't remner my other exhaust being this hot at the backbox.
Iv driven golf about before and then worked under them wile they have just been for a long drive and the backbox's where never to hot to touch they were always just abit how.
It could just be coz I have a free flowing exhaust now and the heat is going all the way through ok but thought I would mention it.

could be that the mixture is wrong (i.e. rich) and that is generating the heat in the exhaust.  Would be tempted to look at ignition timing, MAF and Lambda for this type of problem, in that order.

Yeah totally agree I had this, done a scan and it was the lambda sensor, changed it and it was all good after

Alright mate, i know this may sound stupid but you want to change your distributor and your spark leads. mine was doing exactly the same thing, and i changed them and it's sorted it.. well i changed distributor at first n thought i had sorted it, then it started again, so changed the leads to and it's been spot on since. also i had a funny smell from mine, but i had the plug to the maf unplugged, but when i got my new one in the smell stopped. i know what you mean by hot kind of smell..

You changed the hole distributer or just the rotor arm and cap?

cap and arm is all that are needed.

look in here - has the diagrams for the dizzy and belt:

Hmmm. my mk3 you can change the belt simpler than in your guide...except I don't have a guide that shows how to do it when you don't have air conditioning..maybe someone does??It would help as I will change the belt and water pump if my golf passes the MOT in a few weeks time. :)

I used to have the same thing on my old car.
After changing all the usual bits and checking that everything was clean and functioning + new battery, I still had it.
At around 3k revs it used to do the annoying lag thing
RJ gave me some info about calibrating the 8v (what's yours?) TB/fuel system with VAGcom and that sorted it out.

Sorry for being a bit vague but this was years ago, still something to consider if the problem persists.

yeah, just the cap and and rotary arm mate, i got them from wilco, 8 quid for the distributor and 3 for the rotary arm, it's worth a shot. if not I'd try some new leads. that's sorted mine completely. leads were 31 quid from halfords, their cheaper than wilco n i needed them quick. it's worth doing just to rule things out. my spark/ignition leads looked fine to me, but that was the problem. also have you cleaned your MAF? i got some electrical contact cleaner from Maplin. was like 3 quid. like i said it's worth doing, i never thought it'd solve the problem but was as easy as that. hope this helps mate. let me know how you get on.
