Title: Water leak but not quite sure what part
Post by: vrs lil on 27 June 2012, 18:35
Hello, first post here. Just bought an 8v GTI for £200
However, besides the misfiring and lumpy running I've found a water leak from the hose coming from the header tank to the engine block. However I can't see a visible leak from the hose but it is a bit furred up at the end. Is the part it slides onto at the block a gasket or just a mounting, so I know where to start at least.
Many thanks
Paul
ps... If anyone wants a near mint XR2 mk2 mines for sale, thought I would have sold it by now!

I could be wrong as there are so many versions of the 8v , but the hose goes in to the block via a plastic housing that also has the sensors in it ? The housing cracks around where the bolts screw to the block , need a new cooling sensor housing about £7 from euro car parts of its the bit I'm thinking of ? Don't get a scrap yard one there all old and brittle !

Hope it's the correct bit. hard to trll without pic !

The above sounds about right. Pictures would help confirm.

your after this  http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Golf_1.8_1996/p/car-parts/car-cooling-parts-and-car-heating/cooling/thermostat-housings-gasket/?200440820&1&02e8a171b10c4b27886c707ae483a4c42481fd95&000575

its called a thermostat but the thermostat isnt actualy in there , it comes with the rubber seal and you re use your old bolts , only thing to consider is this is a modified housing with two sensor holes to cut costs , if you only have one sensor you fit the blanking bung if you have two sensors you just fit the two sensors BUT.

you only get the blanking plug if you phone up , when i ordered online they didnt give me onebecause the online system is sh!t ! but when i re ordered over phone there pc tells them they need to offer you a blanking plug . so you think great !
then you find they dont give you the clip to hold the blanking plug in and euro dont even stock or sell this clip ! so you have to go to vw and buy it for like 12P .,

sorry to rant but to cut a story short ,. if you need to use the blanking plug make sure you take a trip to a scrap yard to get a few clips off another sensor there to hold your blanking plug in !
