PM Clipperjay, he's quite good with freezing things to near absolute zero. You never know maybe an easy fix.

Looks like short of gas or dryer could be partialy blocked need to stick gauges to check pressures TBH
When there is not enough gas it boils off quicker and starts to freeze on closest coils i.e not enough liquid refrigerant going through show me better pictures of whole system?
 :nerd:

hi thanks for reply, i cant work out how to take rest out i.e condensers i not great with things like this what parts did you mean to take pics off. will it be damaged if ran getting frozen, i didnt relise was freezing at first. there was a small cylinder about 2cm thick at top of right side getting frozen too. I used the fan loads since last summer to sleep as white noise maybe it full dust further in grills or inside, its one them homebase ones cheers

Okay simple system to me, Its something you can't fix TBF, but best option would be to find a good A/C man to help out they usually charge about £50 call out and insist on a nitrogen leak test there is a reason why its loosing gas usually from valve ports.
The ice is no problem its the leak that important.
Who ever you hire to take the job on make sure they
Nitrogen Oxygen Free (Pressure test)
Use a VAC pump to take air and moisture out.
Change the sausage looking item made from copper its called a Spun drier!
Regass R134a
If the leak is on the (heater matrix (rads) looking parts) it might not be worth fixing!
Anywhere there is copper and valves can be braised/replaced to plug up the leak!
I would charge roughly £150 you might get charged more though dark arts
You could just charge it yourself, but it won't last long depends how fast its leaking?
Yeah £45 quid just get a new one this is a domestic jobbie I rarely touch them as I cost too much to help!   :lipsrsealed:

I do freeze the odd animal and sometimes they do come back to life Honest, Cryo is a dark art

thanks a lot mate really appreciate the reply, i usually lucky with stuff it never fails, most things arnt worth fixing knowadays due to cost, i seen a few sell for 50-70 and people say hardly been used usually but never really know i guess. are these worth much as scrap? and metals in them? what could i sell it for? may ebay it, cheers i been using it as a fan lol it quite powerfull on high and only uses same as normal fan it takes up a lot of room though for a fan, they weigh like 38kg too

not bad i guess if someone know how dismantle and sell scrap, saw this never hurd make though http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Portable-Air-Conditioning-Unit-12000-BTU-H-/261054031366?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Hearing_Cooling_Air&hash=item3cc8086606#ht_639wt_1139

clipper do you know what makes are good or bad or you just know about aircon mechanics

i gooing to die if it hot i really bad with heat i think il acually melt my gaff gets so much sun its unreal

I would just work out the dimensions of the room that I'm trying to cool.
Other wise it would be like a mouse shaggin an Elephant?

KWs or BTU loads of calculators to help work that out!
I'm a big fan of American units as is hotter and the compressors they use are Danfoss units or equator rated.
Not cheap but you get what you pay for?
The idea of heat exchange only works when you dump hot air outside so you would want a unit that has a longish plastic funnel that can be fed to a top window.
I'm not holy convienced that opening a top window that feeds the hot air outside is not letting more hot air inside?  :undecided:
If it was me I would get a hole cut out on the glass and have a cover I could feed the funnel through to maximise the cooling. But the cat flap as I call it would be lockable to stop draughts and cold air in winter catch 22 situation.

Simple machines really just getting the environment right I'm not an expert on domestic units as I custom build for different applications and I have larger units I can make, but I find A/C is not that good for you I prefer climatising in this country!
My car A/C is never on
Simple portable units are just not strong enough and always under powered and eats power like its out of fashion

You say you are bad with heat, but we only had A/C in the last 100 years I'm bad with cold which is ironic as I go down to environments of -55 and where ski clothes in the middle of summer I get funny looks when I suit up
Bottom line cheapest units are ledge mounted where the units are like a box and they get mounted on a ledge where the cooling comes in and hot air is exchanged on the other side of the glass air tight and compact! But are you willing to knock a hole or cut double glazing panel out plus build a concrete ledge for it to sit on?

Manufactures that are good

LG
Daikin
Toshiba
Fujistu

i fine with cold  up to minus 5 id say. I never sleep heating on ever. I hurd dual hose ones work much better but unsure how they work. I had double ply white card and taped to window with exact hole inside used be ok while worked. the room is about 5metres by 4 metres but bedroom only about 3 by 3.5, i dont seam see many dual hose ones mainly one i hurd they less energy efficent. as soon as it 27c+ i really stuggle which can be quite common in my lounge due to sun  :evil:a normal unit isnt really an option it council place and it low on funds, cheers

Dual duct or dual fan only is as good as the system generates the cooling exchange!
I would assume the compressor and condenser match the cooling volume so it needs more fans and duct to get rid of heat exchanged!
Just buy another mate, councils' don't like people drilling holes into their walls
Good call on the card it will help abit if not stopping heat flowing back into the room.

thanks for advice on here was amazing advice and explanations, thought id say i sold the exhaust hose for £20  must be rare of old homebase aircon, and before that i bought a used challenge 12000btu for £52 quid of ebay on auction quite local, in good cond works well only use dit about 6days though dam poor summer . I may sell aircon for scrap the old one wa susing as fan but takes up to much room and swear it smells now stale or of dust not sure if is my carpet or the aircon fan, is a lot of dust stuck in back.

i got an elec meter and worked out it costs me 50p for 4hrs cooling i didnt think was to bad to take edge of as was 30c in my lounge some days got it down to 21c, was good to clear out bedroom before bed too.

ive never understood these units.

they may take mositure out the air but i don't see how they can cool the room as the condenser is in the same room so surely just add all the heat back to the room, and there is a leccy motor so that'll be adding heat

They intake the rooms air in, cool it down and remove humidity, which is blown back into the room to cool it down. The heat that is produced and withdrawn from the unit is exhausted out through typically 4" ducting outside. Obviously hanging the ducting out the window is not exactly clever so people install a 4" hole in the wall with a gravity shutter on the other side.
