Title: Head change now no spark :(
Post by: chrisfletcher on 27 June 2012, 17:53
Hello, i just swapped the head from my old golf to my new one and now for some reason she doesnt spark up, ive checked power to the coil pack and it shows 12v and then drops to 8v (ish) when turning over.

Ive also replaced the coil to a working one, leads, dizzy (complete) ignition module :(

Please help, also if theres anyone in the lincoln area willing to pop on over that would be very helpfull.

Did you line the pulleys up when you changed the head? Given its been off id suspect that first. Do the plugs spark out of the engine?

You say ignition module just changed was it new or second hand? Is it genuine?

Even if the ignition moduel is broken it can sometimes spark but wont run (digifant 8v)

but what engine is it? I would say the dizzy or you forgot to put the rotor arm back in

right managed to get a spark, what does a good spark look like?

A good spark will be bright blue. A poor spark will be yellow. If you have a good spark, it will be ok installed. If you have a pissy little yellow spark, it will probably not spark installed under compression.

Make sure all your pulleys are properly aligned. If the dizzy pully is out its not a biggy, just reposition the distributor.

Oh, and check your earths!! :afro:

8 volts at the coil does't seem enough to me. Is your battery on the way out? The starter motor draws a hell of a high current and if your battery is knackered it wont be up to it.
Try getting a jump start. Good luck

Guessing its the 8v digifant engine?

Does the fuel pump constantly run with the ignition on? it should only prime for a few secs

fuel pump primes only as normal, about 2 seconds or so

Have you checked it's not 180 degrees out ( re. Mr Blue, earlier reply??)
Rotor arm should be by no.1 plug lead with engine at TDC
