Hi.. my suspension setup is supposed to be good but i hate it!
Much too harsh.. Koni Sport Adjst. and Eibach Pro Kit springs.. it's the bloody springs that are the problem.
Can i ask does anyone run on a softer type spring? or does anyone use the Koni springs with Koni shocks?
I get a double bounce going over big dips or bumps and smaller bumps the car seems to crash into them.
From what i've heard the Eibachs are too tightly coiled for any degree of comfort, and it shows.
I'd like to walk along the stocks in europerformance and actually look at the springs, just spoke to them but not much help at all.
Any clued up guys? please help

If you want comfort return to standard,
Ive never been if a car with aftermarket suspension that I can call comfy.

Just what I was going to say.
Springs and shocks work together. Not a good idea to have soft springs and firm shocks
-
Your right, and thanks for the responses..
I guess i was hoping the koni springs might be a tad more giving, no one knows or uses them it seems so there's little to go on, and.. i was hoping to still use the koni shocks.
With this setup even hiting cats eyes throws the car off balance momentarily, you feel like you've lost control, only on absolute smooth roads does the setup do any justice.. i don't know if that's the norm with these things? but well.. i hoped for better really.

Are the shocks set at their softest setting?
Did you cut your bump stops down when you installed the suspension as if you're sitting on them it'll restrict movement and damping.
-
Hi, good to see your still about
But yep.. on softest settings, tried them on halfway between etc, a pain taking the whole rear shock off to do them/reset as you know i'm sure..
Bumpstops cut right down.. i know what you mean though, that would explain the bouncy harsh ride if so..
All new top mounts used and new rubber spring seats.
I've been mulling this thing over for some time now.. you convince yourself it must be good what with the expense and effort of fitting/tracking front wheels and all that, i'm pretty sure i thought yeah this is great' when first fitted.. but now i get back from every drive thinking 'this is friggin rubbish'
I've even started to note the cracks and bumps on my regular routs so as to steer around them! can't be right surely

Hi, on my last mk3 i had a h&r cup kit with boge turbo gas shocks, and i hated the ride when i wasnt thrashing it. on my last car i had a 30mm weitec ultra gt kit and with low profile 18s it was as good a compromise as i could have expeccted and i would.definitely put them on my current mk3 with the higher sidewall of the 15s.

Cheers for the info there.. Yep i tried the boge's with the Eibachs, not nice at all and i probably don't want to go for a whole new suspension kit, that is unless i know exactly what i'm going to get and it's proved to be a problem, you hear and read a lot of stuff but it's all subjective, one persons performance/comfort compromise may be at a different place on the guage to someone elses.
It could be back to standard for me.
Did try running with about 22psi tyre pressures alround  it did help just a bit! hehe.. but then going back to correct pressures you realise how much road noise you were carrying with under inflated tyres.
-
Difficult one this as you don't know what any setup is going to be like until you try it. I have heard very good things about your setup and run a similar one myself but with the eibach sportline springs instead. It's not too bad but is harsher than I thought it would be. Blistein shocks are supposed to be even better than the koni but would be an expensive gamble and I would bet would still be similar to the ones you have now.
How old are your shocks? If you are getting a double bounce suggests to me they may be worn and not dampening properly.
As has already been said I doubt a setup exists that is comfortable, looks good and performs well and it is a matter of compromise.
-
If you run 16" wheels changing to 15" with bigger tyres may help however I much prefer the looks of 16".
-
Hi.. yep shocks a couple of years old but very few miles done on them and when removing the rears for adjustment the damper rods still function as of new.
The ride however is solid, the suspension travel does give but only made to work in evidence when going over speed humps and the like.
The rear of the car pogo's over bumps and the front bangs with a taught wobble over bumps.. there's no absorbtion going on over your every day road surfaces.
If you have a feeling for these things you can tell that the springs are overpowering the action of the shocks, assuming the shocks are in good condition, which they are.
I have the factory long beach alloy wheels and again i don't plan on changing those really..
Citroen 2CV needed.. just for therapy!

I have.
My S3 was on H&R springs, Bilstein dampers and Neuspeed ARBs and it was more compliant than standard, less crashy, had a better low speed ride and handled far better.
My Mk6 GTI on VW Racing springs and ACC dampers is more compliant than a standard GTI on standard springs/passive dampers.
I'd suggest that the Eibach springs are not progressive wound...so tend to be a bit harsh.
Perhaps a swap to H&R progressive wound springs would remove some of the harshness?
-
Pretty sure the eibach are progressive.
-
Pretty sure the eibach are progressive.
The ones I had on my ITR weren't.
Maybe they offer both.
-
It's another thing that would explain the harsh ride i guess, a non progressive sport spring.. but in all honesty when handling/fitting the springs i didn't notice the progressive type wound, i do remember thinking these things are firkin solid and aint goin to move much!
One begins to think that maybe i have the wrong springs! only that i made sure they were the correct items at the time.
-
I also thought they were progressively wound, I know the ones I bought had it written on the box.
This thread would suggest that not all of them are though

-
Yep.. although there's obviously some confusion going around and moreso going by the link there, just read some of it..
Anyway when i take these eibachs off i'm going to melt them down to nothing in a furnace, such is the irritation they are causing me!
So if anyone wants them for nothing.. just ask lol
Supposing that i can find the right replacement spring or go buy the stock vw setup.
-
The stock set up is bloody awful though and gives you a ridiculous arch gap.
I really don't think the problem is entirely down to the springs, your struts will be a lot stiffer than the standard oil filled crap that it left the factory with originally. I couldn't believe the difference when I compared mine to the Weitec Ultra GT struts that went on mine.
-
Well what i mean is the whole vw spring and shocks, not put standard springs on koni shocks, wouldn't work would it..
I know your right about those arches, back to the 4X4 look! not nice but i'm running out of options.
The vw new stock suspension isn't that expensive considering.. i bet those Weitec's are lotsa lotsa..
Don't get me wrong, i like the stance i have at present, it looks right without being an obvious sport suspension job and they are relatively quality items... it must be my age though as i can't live with the jiggly jiggly bang hop crunch ride.
-
Beg pardon.. yes you weren't talking about stock springs on aftermarket shocks, my mistake.. just re read it.
